PREP

A Wonderful Start to the Year for our Newest Brookside Students

Over the past few days, the Prep students have been getting to know their teachers,

classmates, and classroom environment. They are learning how to follow routines, listen carefully, and participate in group activities. We have been focusing on building positive relationships and creating a warm and welcoming learning space for everyone.

Learning Through Play

Our Prep students have been engaging in a variety of play-based learning experiences that help develop their social skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. From storytelling and singing to hands-on activities with blocks, puzzles, and art materials, we are fostering a love for learning in a fun and interactive way.

Building Independence

One of our key goals in these early weeks is to support students in developing independence. We encourage them to unpack their own bags, take responsibility for their belongings, and follow simple instructions. Thank you for your support in reinforcing these skills at home.

Reminders for Parents

Morning Drop-Off: Please encourage your child to walk into the classroom independently. This helps build confidence and resilience.

Label Belongings: Ensure all lunchboxes, drink bottles, and clothing items are clearly labelled to prevent lost property.

Library Bags: On the first day of school, your child was given a red library bag that was supplied by the Victorian Government. It was full of books and other resources for you and your child. Please empty out the bag and return it to school as soon as possible, ready for your child’s library sessions in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support,

The Prep Team

Year 1

The Year 1 students have had a great start to the term. They have settled into their new classrooms and begun making new friendships.

Writing has had a strong start with students eager to show off their hard work by engaging in language experiences such as making chalk drawings, then writing a recount of the activity.

Students have been learning about expectations of the reading hour and exploring different types of books and learning the difference between fiction and non-fiction.

For Maths, students are engaging in various counting activities to build their confidence with numbers. They have also been exploring the properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects.

The grade 1 teaching team has been enjoying building relationships with students and we look forward to helping all of our students striving to achieve their best this year.

Year 2

What an amazing start to the year it has been in Year 2. The teachers have been so proud of how settled the students are and how happy they have been to set up their learning spaces ready for a successful year of learning.

Students have been connecting with familiar faces and making new friendships, learning about the unique talents and personal interests of each student.

Our writers have begun thinking about their emotions, exploring special memories and writing about topics they are passionate about.  Our readers have been exploring classroom libraries, sorting books into fiction and non-fiction and adding favourite texts to their book boxes to enjoy.

Students have begun taking home books for daily reading at home. Can you recognise some of our favourite book characters?

In Maths we are learning about numbers and how our base ten number system works. We know that numbers are made up of parts – thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. We can count collections to find out how many are in them and make models of number using classroom equipment. We have been measuring objects using informal units such as handspans or blocks. Look for numbers when you are out walking or at the shops.

We are excited about the great learning year ahead.
