Reading for Pleasure

If you walk through the school between 9:15 and 9:30, you might notice a certain quietness. Look a little further and you will see students reading books. Scan the room and you will see a bookshelf containing a range of reading materials – novels, non-fiction books on a range of topics, magazines, graphic novels and more. This is Reading for Pleasure, a time for students to pick up a book, any book, and just read.
Great things happen when young people read for pleasure. Reading for pleasure has been linked with many positive life and educational outcomes such as:
- boosts academic achievement, and provides a foundation for critical, digital and information literacy
- builds cognitive function and stamina when immersed in the flow of reading
- develops empathy and knowledge — of self, other worlds, culture, heritage, and ways of being and thinking
- empowers students to become active citizens
- improves and builds psychological wellbeing and healthy behaviours, and
- crucially for young people, can be relaxing and provide an escape
How can parents and carers help?
- Encourage students to bring a book to school to read
- Ask students about reading for pleasure – talk about what they are reading
- Show genuine interest in reading – visit the local library together
