Learning Resource Centre News

It has been a happy and productive start to the year in the library 😊
Library Monitors
Congratulations to the following students who will be training as Library Monitors for the remainder of term 1: Prabhleen Kaur 9B, Liam Jury 9S, Yahya Nasir 8C, Eva Jenkins 8C, Nathaniel Calleja 8C and Olivia Ochi 8C.
Borrowing
I am so happy to report that our students are borrowing and reading books on a regular basis. Each morning I am greeted by students waiting to return books and select their next read. The Reading for Pleasure Program is reminding students the importance of reading on a regular basis. A reminder that all WCC students are welcome to borrow books form the Library. Please pop in to see myself or Mrs Bath for all your borrowing needs.
Year 10 Excursion
Our Year 10 students have been offered the opportunity to visit the Hoppers Crossing Library this term. On the day, the students are greeted by the Youth Librarian, Portia Bellew, who outlines the wonderful resources and programs offered by Wyndham Libraires. Students who chose to do so can also join the library and borrow on the day. The following classes have already completed their visit, 10S, 10C and 10E and the excursions will continue throughout the term. Wyndham libraries offer so much more than books. They offer free WIFI, quiet study spaces, assistance with resumes, computer access and many other activities. See website for details https://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/libraries-education-and-youth

Scholastic Book Club
Our year 7 students are participating in Scholastic Book Club this year. Up to twice a term, during the school year, I will send home a Club catalogue with a different selection of books offered for all ages.
You will find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. I recommend them because the books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $3).
It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe, and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
Owning your own books is something special! I hope that you will encourage your child to order books this year. Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our classroom, however there is never any obligation to order. I know of no better way to encourage reading than to allow children to choose the books they want to read.
Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge
This year we will be again offering the VPRC to all students form years 7-10. Our Year 7 and 8 students will be assisted to complete their registration by their tutor teachers. Students in years 9 and 10 will be assisted to sign up in the library if interested.
The Challenge encourages children and students to read a set number of books over the year and record their efforts online. Since the Challenge first began in 2005, more than 4.5 million students have read over 63 million books.
What’s going on in the Library?
We are open each day from 8am and offer a calm and supported space for students and staff to read, study and work. We will also be offering a variety of “unplugged” activities throughout the year to help reduce screen time and improve mental health.
We started the year by offering a mindfulness colouring and this proved very popular with both staff and students. I think you will agree that the finished product is very cheerful 😊
