"Reading is Magic"
Book Week 2024
"The library is not just full of books, but also opportunities."
Abbey 2016
Our library window has the symbolism of the tree of knowledge. However, knowledge is not the only reason we have a library or the purpose of our library.
Over the coming weeks, this segment will feature words from the leaves on our library tree.
Our words this week are QUESTION and IMAGINE
QUESTION: students are invited to ask questions of their learning and their reading. In the library environment resources exist to offer various modes of research - worldbookonline, SORA, physical texts within the library, interacting and collaborating with their peers on topics of interest in a safe and comfortable space.
IMAGINE: The library provides students with a space where they can enter into other worlds through their imagination.
Mason Cooley once said
“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.”
This year, for the first time, animals in wartime, are in the spotlight.
Featured is Aria from kindergarten who wore a purple poppy offering respect to the service of animals in times of conflict.
Aria is also holding the newest text to add to our and Remembrance Day collection,
"Wear A Purple Poppy: Remembering Animals in War"
Thank you to the many students who take an active role in library tasks each and every day.
Great work Yr 3 for ensuring the returned books are placed carefully and neatly into the trolley to avoid book damage.
More conference news next week.
Last Monday afternoon Yr 4 engaged in an incursion provided by the State Library of NSW, Learning Services Team titled 'FAR Out! Treasures to the Bush'.
Photos and student reflections can be found below.
When the State Library Of NSW brought the treasures to school:
I felt amazed, excited, curious, and interested because they still have things from that long ago. It was so cool that they have all these primary sources of information like Matthew Flinders’ map and the globe which was covered in shark skin.
My favourite object was:
The Matthew Flinders map, because it was so old and amazing that people had documented the stars to find their way, also the paper with all the languages because it told me about my culture.
Tonight when I go home I’m going to tell my family:
about the play that we did, the primary information sources we saw and the history we learnt.

This week Yr 3 finally got their chance to experience the Town Library and Art Gallery.
The grade thoroughly enjoyed the visit including the surprise of the magic show in keeping with the book week theme "Reading is Magic, oh the wonders that can be found in our library.
Thank you to Amy and all the Town Library and Art Gallery staff for helping coordinate and accommodate all of our students.
It's great to see so many library bags returning full of returns, thank you!
Keep them coming.
Keep in mind that Issue 8 will be available in a few weeks online, if you wish to purchase items for Christmas gifts. The items will still come to school and I will contact you for pick up.

Book Busters
BOOK BUSTERS CLUB is an optional early morning reading club for students who wish to come into the cool library before school to read.
"The strongest positive impact on reading engagement and learning gains comes from student self-selection of reading materials. When reading materials are selected for students the links to engagement and learning gain decline significantly."
How Reading Motivation and Engagement Enable Reading Achievement: Policy Implications, Ana Taboada Barber and Susan Lutz Klauda
When students visit the library a huge emphasis is placed on the
premise that they have
CHOICE
in what they can read and borrow.
In the library we are safe online and respectful of each other and the technology.
Please follow the steps:
MONDAY - THURSDAY | Cool maths games, coding - scratch, worldbookonline, Google classroom - class work SORA, World Book ebooks. |

If you would like to access another site, please ask Mrs McGuirk first.
Please note a LIBRARY BAG is the first item on your child's equipment list for this year.
Thank you for ensuring your child has a library bag. I have some spares and will issue these to students next week who have not yet presented with a bag.
LIBRARY BAGS MATTER... Not just some of the time but all of the time.
No food or drink on my books.
Food and drink are for the chooks.
Library bags keep ‘em clean.
Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.
Bring your bag every time.
Fill it up and get in line.
Have it scanned and scoot on out.
LIBRARY BAGS
We all shout.
