Student Learning

What's been happening in Year 1/2O
What an exciting start we have had to Term 4. Not only does the term bring its own sense of excitement, but the students were able to spend 3 days of Week 4 developing their swimming skills. Soon after, on the following Monday, the students enjoyed an outing to the Adelaide Oval.
In English, students have been exploring narrative writing. They have opened up a world of imagination and used The Seven Steps of Writing to create beautiful writing pieces. This has been a great experience for our students to come alongside each other and inspire each others' creativity.
In our Christian Education lessons, the Year 1 students have been learning how to become Peacemakers for life, following the PeaceWise program. This program allows students to recognise their own responses to conflict and learn the concepts and skills of Biblical peacemaking based on a four-part process of:
- putting God first (1 Corinthians 10:31)
- owning their part in a conflict (Matthew 7:3-5)
- talking it over with the other person (Galatians 6:1)
- making it right between them (Matthew 5:23-24).
In Maths, the Year 1 students have been looking at calendars and the duration of time in days, weeks, months and years. They started exploring time and are able to identify time according to the hour and half hour. The Year 2s have been learning how to tell the time. We used mini clocks to practise finding o'clock, half past the hour, quarter past and quarter to the hour. Students are also learning how to tell digital times, as well as calculate the duration of time.
In iUnit this term, the Year 1 students have been exploring the features of places, as well as how we can care for these places and why they are important to them.
The Year 2 students investigated how technologies have changed from the past to today. To consolidate their learning on this topic, the students went on an awesome excursion to the Adelaide Oval. Please see the article and photos below.

Year 1/2 Excursion
On Monday the 11th of November 2024 both Year 1/2 classes departed on an epic adventure to the Adelaide Oval. It was a picturesque day with perfect weather. The level of excitement was clearly evident, as student chatter was heard throughout the morning and on the bus.
This excursion was carefully considered to align with both classes' iUnit topics. The Year 1 students learnt about features of places. At the Oval they were able to give examples of these features.
- Natural - the fresh air around us and the clouds.
- Managed - the Oval and all the beautiful gardens surrounding the Oval. Managed features are maintained and looked after by people.
- Constructed - the Adelaide Oval, and the various changes it has undertaken, mainly over the last 10 years.
The students also suggested ways of caring for these places and ensuring they stay beautiful. They displayed this by ensuring they did not litter or leave any scraps behind after lunch in the beautiful Pennington Gardens.
The Year 2 students investigated how technologies have changed from the past to today. This could clearly be seen in the scoreboard. The students were fortunate enough to go inside the old wooden scoreboard. This scoreboard is still used today. It has only recently been equipped with electricity.
Jackson said,
I liked the scoreboard because it was really big and I learnt that it must have been hard for people to do the scoring in the past.
Hannah said,
It was really fun. I loved learning about how the umpires tell if a ball goes out of bounds. I liked when we went into the Media Room because it was a great view there.
At the end of the tour, the students were allowed to walk around the Museum and experience how not only the buildings and technology have changed over time, but also the clothing that the various players wore and sporting equipment used.

Choir to Resthaven
Our Pilgrim Choir walked to Resthaven, Aberfoyle Park on Thursday 14th November. This was another great opportunity for our students to perform and encourage the residents who thoroughly enjoyed their visit.
If you would like an opportunity to hear the choir perform, they will be performing at The Aberfoyle Hub Shopping Centre, just outside the Nu4U store on Thursday 5th December at 2.00pm. Please respect other shoppers by keeping all walkways accessible if you come to listen to the choir.

Chihuly Glass Exhibition at the Adelaide Botanic Garden: A Year 3/4 Adventure
This term, our Year 3/4 classes had the exciting opportunity to explore the Chihuly Glass in the Garden exhibition at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, where vibrant glass sculptures by artist Dale Chihuly were displayed amidst the beautiful plants and trees.
As we walked through the gardens, the students were amazed by the large, colorful glass pieces nestled among the plants. The bright glass shapes - some delicate, others towering - seemed to come alive in the sunlight, creating a magical atmosphere. From the intricate chandelier hanging in the Palm House to the sparkling sculptures beside the reflective surface of the Sunken Garden Pond, the students were inspired by the way Chihuly’s artwork interacted with nature.
The excursion was not only a chance to see incredible art, but also an opportunity for students to learn about Chihuly’s techniques and how he combines art and nature. This coincides with our Visual Art focus on weaving and the use of different mediums to create complex patterns and colours. The class enjoyed discussing the colours, shapes, and textures they saw, and many students were eager to try their hand at creating their own glass-inspired designs in class afterwards.
A highlight of the day was seeing the Chihuly’s glass sculptures erupt from the lush rainforest inside our magnificent Bicentennial Conservatory where they appear to sprout like ‘hybrid plants’ from the vegetation within. It was fascinating to see how Chihuly’s team creates such intricate glass pieces. Students made their own minibeasts, entering their creations into a competition. A winner will be drawn each month and glass artist Tom Moore will create the winning entries in glass form.

It looks like COVID-19. (Sapphire Star)

The red spikes make me think of memories, up close they are all busy but from a distance you can see how they work together.

The Lily’s make me think of eternity - the real leaves will die but the glass leaves will last forever.

The boat makes me think of sleeping and the glass balls look like dreams escaping into the night.

I want to know how all the different colours get into the glass and how they are made.

The Chihuly Glass in the Garden exhibition is an unforgettable experience for young learners, offering both artistic inspiration and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of nature.
