Literacy

We are now finishing the text 'The Wild Robot', and students have begun drafting their own science fiction narratives. They have been structuring and planning their stories as we have journeyed throught 'The Wild Robot' together. This has been a great opportunity for students to write in a style and about a topic that might be veyr different to their usual narrative choice. In recent classes we have been particularly focused on how to build up to a climax of a story and how to solve the problem in an interesting, yet satisfying way. We look forward to seeing their finished creations.

We are also working on our letter writing skills, but more about that below.

Mathematics

Students will begin to look at Fractions and Decimals. This is a topic we have already spent some time exploring this year and is always a stress point for students. If you get the opportunity, it would be great to have a conversation with your child about fractions and how they are a part of every day life.

STEAM

Most Grade 5s have now completed their base Robots, and are learning the complextities of coding to control those robots to drive a specific track. Some of our more advanced coders are moving on to some of the other models. Our Grade 6s are focussing more on preperation for their graduation and will revisit Digital Design when time permits.

Graduation

Our Grade 6 Graduation is rapidly approaching. The ceremony will be held in the Hub at school once again at 7.30 on Wednesday 17th of December. Students will return to school after 5pm for dinner before the ceremony, with parents and other special guests arriving after 7pm. We ask that no students be at school before 5pm as staff will be getting ready themselves.

The Grade 6 students are working on writing speaches for the evening and have been enjoying reliving memories from the last 7 years of their schooling. We are also excited to begin working on a musical performance for the evening with an enthusiastic band of instrumental performaers and singers. Lyrics are available for students to access in our Google Classroom so that they can practice them at home too.

Swimming Program

The Grade 5/6 swimming program will be running in week 9, from the 2nd to the 6th of December. Please send the following items with your child's name labelledto avoid items becoming lost:

  • Thongs/Slides (to wear on the way to the pool and back - NOT to be worn to school)
  • Towel
  • Bathers (worn to school under uniform)
  • Goggles (if required)
  • A separate bag to carry items to and from the pool
  • Underwear

2025 School Leaders

With the end of the school year approaching fast, the process for selecting our 2025 student leaders will begin shortly. All Grade 5 students will spend time in class over the next 2 weeks working on a letter of application for a leadership role. We are focussing on recognising our personal qualities and skills and how to write a more formal letter. Those that wish to apply for to either School Captain, Vice Captain or an Indigenous Leader, will hand in their applicaiton letter and interviews will be held in the comming weeks. Students who are interested in becoming a House Captain will be supported to modify their letter into a speech, that will be presented to their house in a house rally before student voting takes place.

We wish all our Grade 5s good luck in this selection process and encourage them all to apply. We are always incredibly proud of our Grade 5 students who are brave enough to step up for the challenge and responsibility of a leadership role.
