On Thursday 29 February, the Year 11 & 12 Systems Engineering classes went on an excursion to KIOSC to explore clean energy technologies and their uses.
The main focus of the day was looking at hydrogen as an energy source, and particularly hydrogen fuel cells for vehicles. This ties into our Unit 3 Outcome 2 work on Clean Energy Technologies, as well as the Hydrogen Grand Prix engineering competition that our Unit 1 class is going to be participating in this year.
Across the day, students conducted some science experiments to produce and test for hydrogen gas, as well as getting to build and test an electric car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.
Our Unit 1 class will now take their learning back into the classroom to design, build, and test their own remote-control car, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, before racing against 19 other Victorian schools in July and competing for the chance to go to the Nationals in California!
For our Unit 3 students, this excursion provided some valuable insight and hands-on experience with clean energy technologies and their applications in the world (including their advantages and limitations), which will serve them well for their upcoming SAC.
Students in the Young Designers elective have been working through the production process to create a pair of shorts. Students have a range of different skills and have been stretched to develop their pattern piece further to include pockets and surface decorations. We look forward to seeing their final outcomes.
Keep up the awesome work!
