Art, Drama and Media Camp 2024

Isabel Miller (Year Eleven):

Last Thursday we departed GSG at lunch time and headed for Perth on the school bus, driven by Gracie’s dad. Ms Mordy and Miss Gunning had organised our jam-packed camp. We headed straight to UWA to view an Italian film in the outdoor cinema on the grounds of UWA. Beautiful fairy lights and flowers adorned the garden. We watched an Italian film, complete with subtitles. Such a magical first night. After pizza for dinner, to work in with our Italian theme, we arrived at our Fremantle accommodation ready for bed.

Friday morning, we were up early and headed for the Fremantle station to catch a train to Perth City. We visited the Art Gallery of WA and Perth Institute of Contemporary Art and were taken on a tour to view contemporary paintings and sculptures. I loved the glowing fruit display and the various hanging paintings of grief. After lunch at Northbridge, we headed to the grounds of Curtin University. In the Gallery we were fortunate to have an indigenous guide who explained the historical value and stories of the paintings. Amazing!

After a scrumptious dinner at Grill’d we went to His Majesty’s Theatre and were immediately transfixed by a magical theatre display. A huge chandelier hung from the ceiling as we watched a performance 'Food Masquerades' by New York-based performance-maker Geoff Sobelles. It was really funny! We were privileged to have a 'closed audience' experience. After the theatre, we made it back to our accommodation.

Another early morning saw us at the Sculptures by the Sea with a beautiful sunrise. To finish we had a drawing workshop using the medium of charcoal at the Fremantle Arts Centre. It was a wonderful and informative experience. A picnic followed, and then we departed for home. It was a wonderful and amazing camp.

Thank you to Ms Mordy and Miss Gunning for taking us on a really fun camp. It was an enriching experience.
