The heartbeat of GSG

I am attending Wagin Woolorama this week along with Mrs Julia Bairstow, Community Relations Manager and Mr Ashley Keatch, Head of Boarding.

This is part of a programmed tour of regional and rural communities this year and a very important opportunity to listen and learn from our boarding families and community leaders, and receive feedback about what matters to them most; their children.

I am always struck by the trust families place in us to care, guide, mentor and support their children in a residential environment. This is a privilege as we serve families who seek educational opportunities beyond their place of residence.

I am very proud of our boarding tradition at Grammar as we provide an unrivalled home away from home environment, personalised care, and strong focus on academics. These outcomes are attributed to our smaller size, which is one of our greatest strengths.

Boarding at GSG is truly a diverse part of our school with students from Halls Creek, Broome, Lake Grace, Bremer Bay, Wagin and beyond residing here on campus. Boarding nurtures a community that is inclusive with the aim of every student experiencing a deep sense of belonging.

Despite times of homesickness, challenges of living where you go to school and different family backgrounds; boarding provides students with unique opportunities to build relationships, leadership skills, resilience and independence. Due to our geographical location, boarding students are the beneficiaries of amazing outdoor recreational activities and have the opportunity to contribute to civic life in the Albany community.

You will often hear me say, boarding is the heartbeat of our school. What I mean is; a school’s culture and values reside in our boarding houses and transcends right across the campus. If our boarders are doing well, we are all doing well.

If our boarding community exemplifies high standards, compassion and commitment; the whole campus is positively impacted and we grow a stronger culture, together.
