Health and Wellbeing Promotion
WPSC Wellbeing Team
This term the wellbeing team have been busy with many pro-active programs. These programs have resulted in over 1800 school wide positive interactions with students. In addition to the social and emotional counselling support we offer for our students, we have an onsite Mental Health Practitioner who can help to identify more complex concerns and offer help and support to access appropriate clinical supports in the community.
Thursday 14-September - R U OK Day
The day was free dress in yellow, orange or any colour in the rainbow for a gold coin donation. Raising awareness for the R U OK movement this is one of our biggest school events. There was lunchtime musical entertainment from the school band: RAWR. Guess the number of lollies in the jar game, heaps of giveaways. The local Headspace crew were on site to support our efforts and we also had a lunchtime sausage sizzle provided by our Rotary Club volunteers for a 50c donation. We also created an aerial R U OK photo with all the students from the school.
We can all make a difference to others by simply taking the time to ask, “Are you OK?” By acting as ‘eyes and ears’ and reaching out, we can show others that they are supported and encourage them to access help.
CRAFT CLUB – WEDNESDAY LUNCHTIMES
One of the fantastic activities we have in our school throughout the year is the Craft Club which runs on Wednesday lunchtimes in Room 13. This is facilitated by Maree Strong who is a lady from the Hastings community who is passionate about supporting young people in the area. Maree has been coming to the school each week all throughout the year and has developed a great Craft Club vibe in our school. This is also supported by the wellbeing team. Some of the activities have been cushion making, place mats, candle holders, decorative tiles, pom poms, board games, rock pets, deco frames, tea light holders, and much more. Maree manages to come up with something new and creative each week.
Other activities
We have a magnificent Breakfast Club each Thursday. This is run by our church community volunteers who provide a delicious breakfast for our students each week.
We have also had the Identity Project running this term a program that is for our First Nations students and supported by the Mornington Peninsula Youth Team who work out of Shed 11- Hastings in conjunction with the Headspace support team.
Our DSM Defence School Mentor also offers extra wellbeing support for students of our ADF families who attend the school. This Semester there has been special hot chip and pizza slice lunches for ADF students.
Lastly, as a school we are also focusing on BASE an acronym to help students consider their own self-care and how making simple adjustments to their routine can improve their mental health.
