Fare Share Excursion

Year 11 VCE VM

As part of their area of study in which they are asked to connect with the local community and increase their understanding of issues various groups in our society face, Year 11 VCE VM Personal Development studied the topic, ‘Food Insecurity.’

They explored the various reasons why 1 in 10 Australian families experience food insecurity and learnt about the importance of organisations like ‘Fare Share,’ who help provide food relief packs and meals to families and individuals who are struggling to access and prepare healthy meals.

Students organised a Food Collection Drive at Epping Secondary College and as a community we collected four crates of pasta, rice and canned foods Fare Share staff can use to help prepare meals for vulnerable and needy people in our community.

On Tuesday, 3rd October, the class will also be volunteering at Fare Share in Alphington to help prepare meals, further increasing their understanding of the importance of organisations like Fare Share and how student actions can contribute to positive outcomes.

During this study, students also worked on their communication and numeracy skills as they integrated their learning to include evaluating how many kilos of foods were donated, the types of foods donated and how to prepare information they could share effectively with our school community to promote the food drive initiative.

A BIG thank you to all who donated items for the food drive.

Fare Share Excursion

On October 3rd, the VCE VM Year 11 Personal Development Skills class attended a’ Fare Share Schools in the Kitchen’ morning.

Fare Share prepare meals using food donated by Second Bite and the local community. Their nutritious and delicious meals are then donated to families and individuals who are experiencing food insecurity.

Students prior to the excursion learnt about how through unemployment, a cut in work hours, illness or a medical emergency, families and individuals can find themselves unable to access food and prepare meals.

Other vulnerable individuals in our community, include the elderly and the handicapped. Organisations like Fare Share, offer people struggling to eat healthy meals the chance to enjoy good food.

Our students were involved in preparing food and packaging meals for over three hours. Their efforts resulted in over 200 meals being prepared and packaged.

The students not only learnt the value of volunteering and being involved in their community, they also demonstrated and experienced useful work-related skills including, teamwork, communication and organisational skills.

Well done to all the students involved in this experience.
