How Parents Can Support Their Grade 5 Child at Home This Term

Reading and Spelling at home – A reminder that we encourage all students to read for at least 20 minutes each day at home and also complete their daily spelling homework tasks. We encourage you to listen to your child read for 5-10 minutes of this time as it will allow them to work on their fluency when reading aloud.

My Numeracy – Students have access to their personal My Numeracy goals from home. Their log-in details are located in their diary, and we encourage students to work through their personal goals at home at any time and for parents to support them by asking questions about the topics they are working on.

Grade 5 Specialist Subjects Overview

P.E

Our Grade 5 students will have the chance to dive into the worlds of cricket and hockey. These sports will not only enhance their physical abilities but also teach them valuable lessons about strategy, teamwork, and sportsmanship. We encourage their active participation and enthusiasm in these exciting sports.

ART

Grade Five students will begin the term creating collagraphs. These bas-relief printing plates are created by layering card and other flat materials. The resulting plate has a variety of raised shapes and lines that when rubbed over or printed, make an image. This image can be repeated and again. Through this process students will learn about different materials and techniques that artists use to create prints. Following printmaking, students will then immerse themselves in choice-based rotations. They will re-engage with mediums that have previously been used but this time they are responsible for the planning, preparing, creating, displaying, discussing and cleaning.

S.T.E.M

This term Grade Five students will be working on activities around plants and how they grow, using the garden responsibly and the science of gardening. They will then be using this knowledge to educate their new buddies (2023 Prep students) about what’s in the garden and how to care for it.

LOTE

Grade 5 Students will begin the term with engaging games to revise previously learned vocabulary. The focus topic for this term is Classroom Objects. Students will learn the vocabulary for the items used in the classroom. They will develop roleplays with their peers where they will have complex conversations drawing on the topic words.
