Year 7 have just wrapped up their Guitar and Ukulele Skills unit, where they learned basic chords and strumming techniques. They are now moving on to develop their Keyboard Skills, with a focus on melody, rhythm, and coordination.

Year 9 have recently completed their mandatory Australian Music unit, exploring a range of styles and artists that shape our national sound. They are now diving into a new unit on Popular Music, where they will analyse iconic hits and begin developing their own performance and composition ideas.

Year 10 have commenced their unit on Music of a Culture, where students are researching a non-Western musical tradition of their choice. Through this project, they will explore how music is used to express cultural identity, community values, and social functions.

Year 11 are investigating Australian Artists, engaging in ensemble-based cover performances while building their compositional skills based on class repertoire.

Year 12 are continuing to refine their HSC elective repertoire. With performance exams on the horizon, students are polishing their selected works, some of which will be showcased at our upcoming Solo and Ensemble Night

Japanese

Japanese students in Year 7 and/or 9 will hopefully be able to enjoy some online conversations soon with Tsuchi Junior High School in Kashiwa, Japan.

During these online video calls, our students have an opportunity to practice their Japanese by asking and answering questions. Then, the students from Kashiwa ask our students questions in English so they can practice their language skills as well.

These online exchanges were thoroughly enjoyed last year, and we look forward to linking up timetables and organising more this year too!

Visual Arts

Today, we were thrilled to welcome local practicing artist Freya Jobbins to our school for a special collage workshop with a group of our Year 8 Visual Arts students.

The subject of the collage activity was iconic artist Frida Kahlo, with students using experimental collage techniques to reimagine her image in creative and expressive ways. Freya guided the group through the process, encouraging them to push their creative boundaries and make bold visual choices.

The workshop was designed to extend students' artmaking practice while offering valuable insight into the real-world experiences of a working artist.

A huge thank you to Freya for sharing her time, skills, and inspiration—our students walked away energised, engaged, and excited to keep creating!
