GENERATIONS IN JAZZ

BY HANNAH DENNY (HEAD OF MUSIC)

Earlier this month, 17 students, 2 staff and 1 parent helper attended "Generations in Jazz" for the first time as student participants. Being part of the largest school music festival in the southern hemisphere was simply amazing - over 100 schools and 4300 students.

Both the vocal and jazz ensemble competed with exceptional unity and focus.

Of the vocal ensemble the adjudicator commented that we had a “lovely blend, lovely tones and sounds”. Of the jazz ensemble the adjudicator commented “it is a small band but a good band, I’m really impressed with your sound, you play really well as a little ensemble”.

In the evenings we were entertained by the phenomenal Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band - these concerts provided students with inspiration to further develop their instrumental and vocal skills, likewise were the instrumental workshop which provided students with the steps to further develop their jazz techniques.

Located in Mount Gambier the students had plenty of bus time to chat, sing and strengthen relationships. God wonderfully provided so many blessings, our beautiful house accommodation was only 2 km from the venue, Mr Seskis excelled in providing motivational moments and an excellent facebook commentary. We prayed for God to be glorified through our unity of playing, that we would play to the best of our ability, and that we would feel successful, all these things God provided in abundance.

I am so very proud of the  students who participated in hours and hours of rehearsals. Well done and thank-you for your diligence and commitment to each other.
