Year 8

Year 8 Year Day

On Wednesday 7th May, students in Year 8 walked down to the Pioneer Hall for a series a challenge activity and have a few treats!

Session 1: STEM Activities

Once placed in groups, student was given 2 STEM challenges. Both activities were to build the Eiffel Tower and a Bridge. Students were given a bag of components to make these 2 challenges which includes paper straws, spaghetti, blutac, marshmallows, toothpicks, masking tape and paddle pop sticks. Mrs Taberner and Mr Fearnley were the judges, and they came up with 2 winning towers and a runner up and 1 winning bridge and a runner up. Lots of great construction occurred.

Session 2: Treasure Hunt and Dance Off.

Students had to find as many dinosaur eggs as possible and then had a dance off of which Micah and Xanthe were outstanding in their dances. They showed their dancing talents. We then had some further dancing including the Macarena and Nut Bush before they lined up for a soft serve ice cream or slushy.

Session 3: Maths Murder Mystery

Mr Kroek arrived with lunch and we proceeded with the next activity – The Maths Murder Mystery. While I read the story to the students, Mr Kroek kindly showed his acting skills as the Murder victim. Academy awarded winning! Once the story was over, students were given several tasks in their groups to try and solve the murder.  As at the time of writing this report, no one has solved it. The mystery will be solved during next week’s Year Meeting. We then did some more Dancing and then some other games to finish off the day. Students have indicated that they had fun over the day especially when they were able to get another ice cream or slushy before we finished!

Thank you to Mr Davies, Mr Fearnley, Mrs Taberner, Braydon and Ashley for their assistance on the day. As well as Mr Kroek for bringing lunch and his acting.

Year 8 Year Meeting

On Monday 12th May, during the Year Meeting, Year 8 students were asked in the groups from the Year 8 Day to identify who they thought was the Murderer from the Maths Murder Mystery from the Year 8 Day. Remember, this was a Fiction story told to the students.

Some groups said Mr Fearnley, Mr Davies, Mrs Gilmore, Mr Barense. The main clue was the dog tags. Someone doesn’t wear dog tags but walks around the school and who does this dog belong too!

So, if was discovered that Mrs Langley was the murderer as she had left Winnie’s dog tags behind at the crime scene. As with most NCIS plots, you usually meet the person at the beginning of the investigation of which it then came down to Ms Maddison or Mrs Langley who were guilty as they met Special Agent Gibbs at the front gate.

Students over Term 1, have been doing a program called the Resilience Project. It goes through a variety of topics such as Mindfulness and students have been moving to different teachers to work on the different aspects. During our recent meeting, students were asked to do a short online survey on the Resilience Project to see how they are progressing through this program.
