Over the past fortnight, the Library team has been busy cataloguing a range of new Junior and Senior Fiction books, now ready for borrowing!
Kids Lit Quiz
On 2 May, I had the pleasure of supporting two teams from Moama Anglican Grammar as they participated in a virtual heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz.
The competition consisted of 10 themed rounds, each focusing on a different aspect of literature, ranging from colours and animals to mythology and more.
I would like to extend my congratulations to our enthusiastic participants:
MAG Team 1 – Julie Tran (Year 6), Kusali Gamage (Year 6), Lily Watson (Year 6) and Hudson Knight (Year 4) — placed 5th.
MAG Team 2 – Cleo Guinan (Year 5), Violet Lew (Year 5), Shriya Rayas (Year 5) and Imogen Smith (Year 5) — placed 18th.
We are proud of their efforts and look forward to taking part in this exciting event again next year.
"A few weeks ago, on Friday the 2nd of May, we took part in the first round of the Kids’ Lit Quiz. Schools from all around NSW and Victoria competed against one another for a chance to move on to the next round, hosted in Sydney.
At 9:45am, our school’s participants from Years Four, Five and Six gathered in the library, where we split into two teams: MAGS Team 1 and MAGS Team 2. After an explanation of the rules, we chose the theme we wanted for our double points round. We (MAGS Team 1) picked mythology and MAGS Team 2 picked colours. After a few minutes, the first set of questions was presented, and the battle for victory began. There were ten diverse categories, each containing ten questions, totalling one hundred questions over approximately three and a half hours.
Teamwork played a tremendous role in our progression through the rounds, making it a memorable experience, one that will be remembered with great fondness. Overall, we learnt that we just need to read a greater variety of books as well."

Boomerang Library Bags
At the beginning of the year, we lent out a number of library bags to ensure all students had the opportunity to borrow books. If your family has a library bag at home that looks like the one pictured, we kindly ask that it be returned. This will help us continue to support students who may forget their own library bags, allowing them to still enjoy borrowing books.
Volunteers
We are always very grateful for the volunteers who assist us in many different ways within our space. Their help is truly invaluable.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Carys Owen and Mrs Alex Kent, who have generously covered many books and readers for us over the past 12 months.
Over the past few years, we have also welcomed many Year 8 volunteers into the Resource Centre, where they have been building their skill base — from labelling books and cleaning shelves to assisting with creating displays.
Resource Centre Committee
The Resource Centre Committee meets at lunchtime every Monday in RC2 (the computer lab). Over the past few weeks, several members have been working hard to complete the backdrop for National Simultaneous Storytime, which is now beginning to come together.
Scholastic Book Club
Thank you to the parents who have placed their order on this issue of the Book Club!
Did you know that every purchase you make on Book Club earns our school 15% of the order value in Scholastic Rewards? We use these to purchase more books and educational resources for the school. It all helps!
We have recently closed the latest Book Club Loop. Once the orders arrive we will distribute them to classes at the earliest convenience.
National Simultaneous Storytime
We are looking forward to the annual National Simultaneous Storytime, which will be held next Wednesday 21 May, during Periods 3 and 4. Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 will visit the library to take part in this exciting event.
Our guest speaker, Mrs Joanna Lee—who is also one of our school parents—will share her experience of migrating to Australia, which ties in with the themes of The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel.
Following this, at 12:00pm, The Truck Cat will be read aloud by Mrs Belinda Lees, a teacher at our school and a published author.
Premier's Reading Challenge
The challenge closes on August 23rd.
The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is upon us again.
The 2025 Challenge is in full swing, and it’s exciting to see that some students have already completed it, great work and congratulations on your achievement!
If you would like to begin sourcing books for your child/ren to read for the Challenge, we encourage you to preview the reading lists available on the PRC website: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/booklist/home.html

Borrowing and Returns
Students may borrow and return books before school, recess, lunchtime and after school. Primary School students also have the chance to borrow books during their fortnightly Library lessons.
Borrowing Permissions
If students are requesting to borrow books above their age level, we request parents to write a letter regarding their permission for their child to borrow and read a specific book which will be reviewed by library staff.
Renewals
Students are able to re-borrow books for an additional two weeks by speaking to staff at the Library Circulation Desk. If further borrowing is requested after this, students are required to bring their book/s with them to allow the staff to see the book. In addition, students can renew their book/s by emailing the Library.
Requests
If your child would like to borrow a specific book and the title is not included in our current catalogue, we will add this to our purchase wishlist.
Overdue notices
If you receive an overdue notice, there is a chance that the books may have been processed through our system after the email was sent. We encourage all parents to follow up on any issues by emailing the Resource Centre at library@moamagrammar.nsw.edu.au
Reading Permissions
Due to our shared space catering for students from Kindergarten to Year 12, our library collection is organised to help students easily find books with protagonists close to their own age. For example, in the Upper Primary section, most of the characters are between 11 and 13 years old. This approach ensures that themes and content remain age-appropriate, and also supports students in reading independently and with confidence.
When deciding where books are placed within the collection, we are guided by author and publisher recommendations.
If a student wishes to borrow a book above their recommended age level, we kindly ask that parents provide written permission either via a letter or email to library staff, confirming approval for their child to borrow and read that specific title.
If you have any other enquiries, issues or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us via phone by ringing the main office or via email address library@moamagrammar.nsw.edu.au
