May, the month of Mary

May is the Month of Mary. For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of May to honor Mary, Mother of God—not just a day in May, but the entire month.

The month of May is a special time for Catholics to pay homage to our Blessed Mother Mary. We pay homage to her. Contrary to misconceptions, we do not worship her. As Catholics, we honor Mary. It is also that time of year when motherhood is celebrated through the annual event known as Mother’s Day.

Devotion to Mary is an important part of our Catholic identity. As our mother, she is an example of a committed “Yes” to the will of God. Because of the devotion to her, many people ask her for help in the most difficult moments of their lives, as any child does with their mother.

What we can do today to honour Mary:

  • Pray the Rosary
  • Say the Hail Mary Prayer throughout the day
  • Create a Prayer Corner, placing some representation of our Blessed Mother whether that be a photo, small statue, or Rosary beads.
  • Create an outdoor space, flowers in honour of Mary

Commitment Masses - Confirmation candidates

On Saturday, 4 May, and Sunday, 5 May, at three of the parish Masses, the Year Sixes were presented to the St John's Parish community as those preparing for and committing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on June 13. We thank Fr Vinh and Fr Geo for leading the students in this part of their journey, and we also thank the families, teachers, and parish community for their support during this preparation period.

As our Year Six students continue to prepare to receive the sacrament of Confirmation we pray:

God of Life,

You have called us all by name to be your children.

Guide, protect and inspire us as we present our children

for the sacrament of Confirmation.

Continue to keep all your children in your tender,

loving care.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
