In literacy, the Preps are learning to apply their letter–sound knowledge to write simple words that follow a consonant–vowel–consonant (CVC) or vowel–consonant (VC) pattern—for example: sat, am, Sam, map, and tap. They also use sound boxes to segment and blend the sounds in simple words in preparation for reading. In addition, the students are practising the correct formation of letters.

When learning a new sound, the Preps use mirrors to observe the correct positioning of their lips and tongue during articulation. They also place a hand on their throat to feel whether there is vibration or no vibration, depending on whether the sound is voiced or unvoiced.

The Preps are learning to partition whole numbers up to ten into two or three parts. They are using concrete materials to explore different combinations that make up a given whole number. This week, they played the dice game Tenzi to reinforce their understanding of number combinations.

This week in Inquiry, the Preps shared photos of their favourite places with their peers. At first, some students felt scared and shy; however, after an initial prompting question, they gained confidence and were able to share the features of their favourite place. After the presentations, we reflected on how our bodies feel when we try a new activity or experience. Nella said she felt excited after completing her presentation, while Charlie shared that he felt good once he was done. As a group, they agreed that they all felt very proud of themselves for being brave and speaking in front of the class.
