Welcome Pope Leo XIV
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the Pope? The Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church, and he helps guide millions of people around the world to follow Jesus.
The Pope helps us understand how to live like Jesus, reminding us to love one another, care for those in need, and pray every day.
The word Pope comes from a word meaning “father.” The Pope is like a spiritual father to Catholics everywhere. He lives in a special place called the Vatican in Rome, and he spends his time praying, teaching, and helping the Church. Even though we may never meet the Pope, we can listen to his messages and follow his good example.
The Catholic Church has chosen its new Pope - Robert Prevost who will be known as Pope Leo XIV. There have been 13 other Popes named Leo. One of the most famous was Pope Leo I, also known as St. Leo the Great. He became Pope a long time ago in the year 440. He was brave and wise, and he helped protect the Church during difficult times.
Pope Leo XIV is the first American to fill the role of pope, he was born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent and was ordained as a priest in 1982.
Although Leo moved to Peru three years later to be a missionary priest there, he returned regularly to the US to serve as a priest in his home city. He has Peruvian nationality and is fondly remembered as a figure who worked with marginalised communities and helped build bridges.
We pray for Pope Leo XIV asking God to give him wisdom, joy, and strength as he leads the Catholic Church into the future.
