Year 3/4 Learning

English & French

It has been an exciting and productive start to the term for Year 3/4, and we are thrilled to share the wonderful work we have been doing!

This term, we have begun by exploring the world of poetry. We have been experimenting with different types of poems, from acrostic to shape poems, and even cinquain. It has been fantastic to see the creativity flow as the students have been using descriptive language and experimenting with rhythm and structure. The students have really embraced this opportunity to express themselves, and many have created some very interesting and unique poems. We are proud of their efforts and the enthusiasm they have shown in this area of learning!

In Numeracy, we began with a focus on statistics and data. Students have been learning how to collect, display, and interpret data through graphs and charts. They have enjoyed hands-on activities where they collected their own data and presented it visually.

As we move forward, we are excited to dive into multiplication and division. This next unit will build on their number knowledge, with a particular focus on understanding the relationship between these two operations.

Students will engage in a variety of activities to strengthen their skills and build their confidence in solving problems.

Since the beginning of Term 2 in French, students in Year 3/4 have been revising and expanding their vocabulary to describe past experiences, particularly focusing on recounting their holiday activities. They have successfully written engaging personal recounts in French using time expressions and action verbs.

Building on this foundation, students have now begun exploring the genre of historical fiction through the French series La Cabane Magique. As they read and discuss the story, they are developing their understanding of narrative structure, historical vocabulary, and descriptive language. Over the coming weeks, they will apply these skills to plan and write their own short piece of historical fiction in French.

Student Feedback

Arafat: I really enjoy Numeracy in general as it is like a mini test for your brain.

Aurora: I have loved the start of the year and have enjoyed all subjects!

An Adventure Through Time in Grades 3/4! At the start of Term 2, tGrade 3 and 4 students discovered an exciting new literary genre: historical fiction! Through the thrilling adventures of Tom and Léa in the Magic Tree House series, the students explored the key features of this genre, which blends fiction with historical facts. Over the course of several weeks, they travelled through time to fascinating periods such as the time of the dinosaurs, Ancient Egypt, and the Middle Ages. This immersive experience helped them understand how authors use real historical settings to build engaging narratives. Inspired by this model, the students then let their creativity shine by writing the beginning of their own historical fiction story, following the same structure as in The Magic Tree House. It was a wonderful opportunity to build their reading and writing skills while fueling their imagination!

We were thrilled to welcome Gabrielle de Vietri, a Member of the State Parliament representing The Greens Party, to speak with our Year 3 and 4 students this week. Gabrielle shared the core beliefs and priorities of The Greens, including a strong focus on affordable housing, lowering the voting age to 16, and protecting our environment.

As part of her presentation, Gabrielle also explained the three levels of government and the responsibilities each holds. She was very impressed by the students' existing knowledge and their thoughtful engagement with these important topics.

Following the discussion, the students took part in a mock vote where they ranked eight different issues in order of importance. The top-ranked issue was “providing homes for everyone”, which Gabrielle noted will help guide her future advocacy in Parliament.

Gabrielle was genuinely inspired by the students’ curiosity, compassion, and the insightful questions they asked throughout the session. In fact, we were the first Year 3/4 group she has ever presented to—a moment we are all proud of!

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Gabrielle de Vietri for taking the time to visit and deliver such an engaging and meaningful presentation. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn more about democracy, civic responsibility, and how their voices matter.
