Anzac Day Service
Last Friday, Mr Morgan had the opportunity to join two of our student leaders, Will and Anastasia, at the Arch of Victory/Avenue of Honour Anzac Day Memorial Service. As part of the service, 19 sets of brothers were commemorated (now remembered by street names in the suburb of Lucas), who died in the First World War. Among those being remembered were James and John Lumsden, past pupils of Scotsburn and Buninyong Primary Schools.
James was killed at Messines in Belgium in June 1917 while his older brother, John, was killed in France in September 1918.
Ana and Will represented both Buninyong and Scotsburn to lay a floral tribute in memory of the Lumsden brothers, as well as placing a poppy by their names on the Memorial Wall. The service was a moving tribute to these families, with both Ana and Will doing an incredible job to represent the community with dignity and respect.
Well done Ana and WIll.
Japan Day - This Friday 2nd May (whole day at Buninyong)
A reminder that Japanese Day is this Friday, 2nd May! This is always a highlight on the calendar, with lots of cultural fun to be had throughout the day. A reminder that this day will be a drop off and pick up at Buninyong, with a whole school assembly in the morning.
Please have a good read of the Japan Day section in this week’s newsletter, including information about the Japan stall where students have the opportunity to purchase small items.
On the day, students are encouraged to dress up in their favourite Japan-themed costume. The Scotsburn students will be spread across the year level classrooms (paired with friends from Scotsburn), to participate in the year-level based activities.
We can’t wait!!!
Mother’s Day Stall - Thursday 8th May
Our annual Scotsburn Mother’s Day stall is back! This is an opportunity for our students to express and learn more about gratitude, as well as giving thanks to the Mums or other significant people in their lives.
All gifts are $5, with students having the opportunity to purchase one or two gifts. Don’t forget to send some money along with your child on this day.
We have an assortment of items to choose from that the students think our Mums would like… we can’t give too many clues away!
Mother’s Day Breakfast - Thursday 8th May
As was the case last year, we are planning to celebrate all of our wonderful mothers in the community with a Mothers’ Day Breakfast. This special occasion will take place on Thursday 8th May, between 8:15am and 9:30am in the old building, Scotsburn. No need to bring anything, we will have all food and drink sorted, celebrating all of the wonderful contributions our Mothers’ and special friends play in our lives.
Classroom 1%ers
As part of Buninyong Primary School’s classroom routines and expectations, we are continuing this term to have a specific focus on what we are calling the classroom 1%ers. These are the small things that when combined, make a big difference to continuing to maintain a successful and safe learning environment for our students.
For the first few weeks at Scotsburn in Term 2, we will be maintaining a really strong focus on the following:
- Classroom floor and transition routines and expectations
- High expectations of book work
- Lining up routines (including washing hands, getting drink and toileting as soon as bell goes)
- Collective responsibility for maintaining neat and tidy learning spaces.
Victorian High Abilities Program
Congratulations to Lachy B who will participate in the Maths Program this term. Lachy has been selected to participate in weekly sessions with other like-minded students across Victoria. Amazing Lachy!
Food Bank Fruit and Breakfast Club Program
This term, we are officially up and running with the Foodbank program, receiving specific Scotsburn deliveries of fruit and breakfast items each week. Amazing!
As a reminder we will continue to offer Breakfast Club on Wednesday mornings before school, as well as fresh fruit for students throughout the day.
If any parents are free to volunteer some time on a Wednesday morning (8:40am - 9:20am) we would love the support!
Toastie Tuesdays!
Another reminder that Toastie Tuesdays will continue every Tuesday, for the hefty price of $1! Don’t forget to send a gold coin on Tuesdays for those that would like a Toastie.
Buninyong Community Playgroup
We look forward to once again welcoming the Buninyong Community Playgroup for a few mornings this Term. See below for their upcoming schedule. For their second visit to Scotsburn, our students will join the playgroup for an interactive incursion from the Ballarat Art Gallery - how cool!
SC1 Learning Snapshot - Writing
This week, our SC1 students have begun developing their narrative writing skills. We started by creating a character and considering their appearance, feelings, and actions. We will also brainstorm other elements such as the setting, problem, and solution, and then write a story. This is being taught alongside our sentence-level writing lessons.
SC2 Learning Snapshot - Reading
This week in SC2, we have begun our Term 2 class text, Wonder. This is a wonderful novel that explores many themes and topics relevant to our students, none more so than kindness. Whilst exploring the text during reading sessions, our class structure includes unpacking key vocabulary, reading fluency, as well as this week analysing character perspectives. Students also have the opportunity to spend a short amount of time independently reading their own levelled texts, working on individual reading goals. We know that this is a really important part of our daily reading schedule!
Scotsburn Intercampus Travel At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.
We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements. If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding intercampus travel, please contact your child’s teacher. |
