Spotlight on Learning - Room 6
During semester one, Room 6 has been delving into what makes up Australia through the lens of natural and human-made features.
Students learned about the map of Australia and how it looked originally, before separating the map into the different states and territories we know now. We also investigated the Indigenous map of Australia to compare how many different language groups are within it. Students used atlas’ to help them label a map with the capital cities before learning about the different features of each place.
In our fluency lessons, we further looked at some of the natural and human-made features by reading about the Great Dividing Range as well as the oyster exports of Tasmania. Furthermore, students were able to compare Australia’s features with those of surrounding countries. We completed some reading comprehension tasks where students compared Australia to New Zealand to help them better understand what makes Australia so unique.
Students were then tasked with creating a poster explaining the features of a state of their choice. They needed to include a title, subheadings, pictures and at least 5 facts about the natural and human-made features of their chosen state or territory. They conducted their research using the atlas’, credible sources from the internet as well as fact files that helped them to organise their information. Room 6 worked hard to create some eye-catching and interesting posters, summarising their knowledge from HASS lessons this year.
