LISA CHESTERS MP VISIT

As you may have noticed, our school flags were looking a little worse for wear and so we notified  Lisa Chesters Our local MP. Lisa kindly visited our school on Wednesday to bring us 3 beautiful new national flags which are now flying proudly over our schoolyard.

Lisa provided the school with a set of books taken from the Prime minister's 2024 booklist. A great addition to our school library! She then spent about an hour talking with the grade 5-6 children. Apart from discussing a politician's life and work, Lisa threw a question to the children; 'If you were prime minister, what would your priorities be for our country?'

The conversation that followed was very interesting. Hearing from the children about the things they see as important issues in our country today was eye-opening and made me very proud of our young people.

Topics brought up by the children included:

  • Fuel prices
  • Vaping and smoking regulations
  • Alcohol
  • Homelessness
  • Climate change
  • Energy production

These kids never cease to amaze me. Their discussion was broader than anticipated and their understanding of the complexity of these issues was much deeper than expected. It feels like such a short time ago these children were far more interested in toys, and puppies and playing in the sand - as young children should. In the blink of an eye they've become young adolescents; not adults, but no longer children. One of the very best parts of this job is being witness to this change.
