MENTAL COMPUTATION GOALS

Throughout the year, the junior teachers have used data to identify areas of need for students, and created personalised number goals for students to work on. These goals are regularly shared with parents and updated when needed. They are very important to your child's mathematics learning, as they are tailored specifically to their point of need and allow students to gain mastery of fundamental mathematical skills through repetition and developing automaticity.

It is important for you as parents, to remember that the students are working on the automatic recall of these foundational facts. Research shows that for an average student to gain mastery or automatic recall of these types of facts, they must be exposed to them over 400 times!!   When teachers are assessing the students on these particular goals, they are looking for automatic responses, not for the students to be using strategies to work the question out. Therefore your child might stay with a goal for an extended period of time.

Thank you for your support in this area of mathematics. We encourage you to ask your students about their maths goals and help them to practise them each night for just a few minutes. The Preps currently have their Structuring Number Goals and the Grade 1/2s could benefit from continued practise at home of their counting goals.
