What an exciting and amazing opportunity the grade 3/4 students and teachers have recently experienced.
After engaging in the "Improving Writing" professional learning with the very highly regarded literacy expert, Dr Misty Adoniou, our teachers were able to explore new and exciting ways to use mentor texts in the classroom.
The Grade 3/4 teachers have been teaching students to look more deeply and critically into texts and their own writing, as they explored creative non-fiction texts by authors Catherine Barr and Jam Ramage. This training provided our grade 3/4 teachers with inspirational, unique and engaging ways to introduce texts to provide memorable literacy learning experiences.
The 3/4 reading and writing program not only supports the use of quality texts in the classroom, but also offers exemplars of language usage and illustrations for stretching students' reading and provides models for improved writing.
All of this hard work by both students and teachers culminated in the "Writing Symposium". A range of schools presented at the symposium and our teachers very confidently and proudly shared the work they did with the students, and the students' beautiful classroom book creations linked to their Inquiry unit about "Let's Save Darebin".
On the day at the symposium, Dr Adoniou was very impressed with the output by students and the impact of the display created by the teachers. Many other teachers commented favourably on the work of the teachers and students.
We were lucky enough to share this experience along the way with Catherine Barr in the UK, and by showing her some of the works created by students, who were inspired by her books in the "Let's Save" series.
I have some very nice little prizes that I am giving to the first 3 children each fortnight, who come to me with their responses to these "Super Literacy Challenges". But you have to be one of the first 3 to show me your responses...and you have to be correct of course!
Are you going to give it a go? You will also have your name published in the newsletter as a "Super Literacy Winner"
Words from Words
Summer is almost here...so our word this fortnight is - " Summertime"
S U M M E R T I M E
Your challenge is to make as many smaller words as you can from this one word.
HINT: There are 50 words you can make!
...well, actually there are really 242 words that can be made, but I will settle for 50.
Good Luck - don't forget to see me first to claim your place and to have your name recorded in the newsletter as a Super Literacy Winner and collect your prize.
