Secondary School

Last week we celebrated the end of our Year Twelve cohort’s formal schooling. On Thursday we held our traditional water fight, breakfast with staff, and final House meetings.

On Friday we held our Year Twelve Chapel Service where we focused on gratitude followed by our formal Valedictory Assembly.

I thought I would share my speech with you below:

Good Morning; I would also like to extend my welcome to you all today.  Somebody commented that we shouldn’t be surprised that so many people are here today now that we are post COVID but I think there may be more to it than that.

The Class of 2023 have been an absolute pleasure to work with.  They somehow worked out quite early on in their journey, the enormous benefits of working with the school to help them set themselves up for their lives beyond Great Southern Grammar.  They have been on board, built fantastic relationships with staff, and been amazing role models.

Some examples of how this looks include wonderful attendance and behaviour at the ball and associated events, incredible participation in the World’s Greatest Shave where they raised over $12000 for charity, and the integral role they played in the new school structure through Homeroom where they have connected with younger students and enhanced the feeling of belonging.

What stands out in my mind is the way that they have done all of this with a sense of fun.  I leave every meeting with this group of young people laughing.

Now, please don’t think I have my rose-tinted glasses on; this group have definitely had their fair share of boundary pushing!  We’ve had short skirts, loud boys, big earrings, hairy lips, interesting timekeeping and a determination to bring school bags to Maths in the afternoon but when challenged, this group have stepped up, every time.  And every time we have needed to reach out to families, we have had wonderful support.  We have worked together on academic pathways, injuries and health concerns, behaviour matters and many other things.  I appreciate the positive support so much, and that includes the times when you have called me out on my errors!

You have always communicated with grace, exhibiting our school values beautifully.  No wonder this cohort have been on board!  Year 12’s, I have told you many times that I will miss you, but I am going to miss your families, too!

So, am I surprised that there are so many of you here today?  Absolutely not because we have all been on this journey together, guiding the young people before us with the same positive messages.  Thank you.

Our Year Nine students have had a busy week with OLNA assessments as well as their Humanities excursions.  I have been very impressed with how organised and prepared these students have been, especially for their first round of these important assessments.

Results come out at the beginning of next year.
