Year 8 Region Girls Volleyball
On Monday 23rd October, our Year 8 Girls Volleyball team competed at the Eastern Metropolitan Finals held at the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong. In our pool we had three other competing schools to play against for a spot in the final.
Our first game was against Koonung SC. The first serve of the day from Maria Shugai went deep and was unable to be returned resulting in our first point for the day. The game continued in a similar fashion with incredibly strong and powerful serves. Maria gained us a six-point lead in our first set and Katherine Ta had 4 serves that were also unable to be returned. We worked incredibly well as a team, utilising our three hits almost always. We won our first game 2 sets to nil (Set 1: 20-18 Set 2: 20-7)
Our second game was played against Heathmont SC. We came away with a convincing 2 sets to nil win again (Set 1: 20-6 Set 2: 20-12). Our third and final game in our pool became the decider for a chance to play off in the final. We played against Mooroolbark SC and this was very evenly matched. We lost our first set 20-15. With some fantastic coaching advice and support from their student coaches Yong Hong Mau and Matthew Lo from Year 10, the girls rallied together and with great resilience won their second set 20-15. It came down to a tiebreaker set first to 15 which our girls again remained calm and composed. They did as their coaches said and controlled their side of the court and came away with the win!
We played the final game for a spot at the State Championships against Monbulk SC. Another great game to watch, this game came down to another tiebreaker set which we unfortunately lost 15-6.
Whilst disappointing not to progress to the State finals, there were some incredibly positive takeaways from the day. The girls played this same competition as Year 7’s and did not win one game from their pool and this year won them all. They were 9 points away from progressing and the convenor commented on the strength of the Eastern Metropolitan Region at the State Level.
I was so impressed to watch the beautiful teamwork and support both the players and students gave one another all day. This team put many hours of practice during school lunchtimes and were so deserving to be there. I cannot wait to see what next year brings! Well done to you all.
