Respecting Aboriginal people and culture

Do you sometimes see before the start of a TV program a warning to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers?

If you have and have wondered why, well you are not the only person.

The warning alerts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that what they may watch may contain images, references or the names of First Nations people who have died. This warning allows First Nations people to decide before watching whether they want to continue watching or not.

This is a sign of respect to the Aboriginal culture because when a deceased Aboriginal person’s name is mentioned, the spirit is called back to this world.

It is also very important that when names or images are used, written permission is given by the family and/or community.
