Anchors in Unsettled Times

Dear Parents/Guardians

During storms, anchors are used to combat wind and currents that want to move a vessel off course. If they are out to sea and cannot make contact with the seabed, sea anchors are used. These are drag devices which again, minimise the drift of a vessel, preventing the vessel from losing its way.

In the storms of our lives (illness, uncertainty, conflict, division, failure, etc.), what are the anchors that keep us ‘on course’?

In partnership, what anchors are we as school staff and parents encouraging our children to have as they also navigate their own stormy seas?

We are incredibly blessed at HCC to have a wonderfully caring staff and Wellbeing Team to help equip and guide the young people in our care with resources and strategies to cope with the storms life throws at them. Whether this be helping our young people stay on course through academic struggles, family breakdowns, friendship disputes, social/emotional challenges, or even how to process current national and world events.

However, our most important anchor must never be discounted or forgotten.

In Psalm 62, King David is facing the storms of betrayal and rebellion against him. While he is in danger physically, he is also threatened with his emotions taking over as it was most likely those closest to him, including his own son, who were rallying against him. In this storm, where did he turn?

What was his ultimate anchor?

In verse 1 and 2 we read,

For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken”

And later, he encourages us to have God as our anchor. Verse 8 reads,

“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us”.

Our College theme for this year has been STRONGER. As we continue to grow in strength as a community, let us also hold fast to this truth, that our ultimate strength is found to be complete in God.

Grace and peace
