Food Technology

In Food Technology, students in Year 8 recently completed their Term 4 Learning Task. Students worked through the design process to address the following problem: A snack food company is concerned that people are buying less snacks due to health reasons. They are looking to add a healthy snack to their product range.

Students worked to identify the criteria that make snack food appealing to people and the criteria that make food healthy. Using this knowledge they developed their own recipe to create a healthy snack food.

As part of the design process, students did a ‘test cook’ of their recipe first, using the opportunity to ensure they had understood the requirements of the recipe. Students then reflected on the success of their cook and noted any improvements they could make for their final product to be successful.

In the next session, students completed their final cook, using their knowledge of the required cooking techniques and the noted improvements from their test cook session. The results were an array of healthy and delicious snacks and a stronger understanding of the steps involved in researching, testing and improving a designed solution; in this case, snack foods that were eagerly shared amongst their peers.
