Grandparent/Special friends Morning
Grandparents/Special friends Morning was Thursday 31st October. We welcomed our Grandparents/Special friends at 9am with a Liturgy in the Mercy Centre, which was beautiful. The Grandparents and special friends were then invited back to visit our classrooms. We had some little activities and games to share, it was a fantastic morning and so great to see so many of you come and join us.
Footy Visitors
We had some special guests from Melbourne Football Club join us and answer some of our burning questions. We learnt that these players are passionate about their sport and really love chatting to students about their hopes and dreams.
English
We've immersed ourselves in transactional texts and the world of messages. We've had a lot of fun writing letters to students in other grades as well as receiving letters. We've had quite a few students discover the world of being a postmaster in mail sorting room is quite a big job.
Throughout our explorations of transactional texts, we've delved into the secret world of Morse Code. We had lots of fun decoding messages and creating our own.
We then began to wonder some of the other ways people can communicate messages and discovered the world of sign language and really enjoyed learning how to finger sign our names.
This lead us to question how vision impaired people are able to read and write messages and we investigated Braille.
We also enjoyed taking some time to learn to spell our names in Braille.
Within our literacy block we also use games to assist with our learning to help consolidate new knowledge. We have several different tasks and students spend 7 minutes at each station, giving them a go at each one. The children love these literacy games, they are a fun and interactive way of learning.
Mathematics
Over the last few weeks we've been investigating 2D regular shapes and have really enjoyed the challenges of working with Tangram shapes to solve a variety of puzzles. We thought that putting this Tangram puzzle back together would be so easy... looks can be deceiving.
The game Tangram Puzzles on Math Playground is a fantastic problem solving resource to practice manipulating shapes.
We've also used our knowledge of shape and the attributes of shapes such as sides and corners to experiment with building and have found out that the triangle is a very strong shape that builders like to use.
Religion
The exciting season of Advent is fast approaching and we've begun to delve into the Nativity story. We took a virtual tour of Bethlehem and enjoyed seeing how different the city was compared to what we imagined it to look like in all the stories we'd read about Jesus in the manger. This week we've started to look at the nativity story and key events.
We have particularly liked viewing the following performances made by students around the same age.
