Grades 3 and 4 have printed, drawn and painted a fireworks display as part of their unit on celebrations. The most iconic use of fireworks is linked with the celebration New Year's Eve and the students were keen to share their knowledge and experiences of fireworks. I think the most enjoyable part of this activity was the abundant adding of glitter to their printing of fireworks! The glitter really made their pictures pop with sparkle.
Grade 5s began to model a clay Christmas bell. They moulded their clay into a sphere, made a basic pinch pot, and then shaped their clay into the desired form for a bell. Some bells were rounded while others were more pointed. Students had a range of tools to imprint patterns onto their bell, and they could also add additions to it such as holly leaves or Rudolphs' antlers and facial features. It was great to see their imaginations flow as they created more traditional bells as well as a Christmas beetle bell and some Rudolph-inspired bells. They also made a ringer from a small sphere of clay, and they will glaze their clay after it has been bisque fired in the kiln. After glazing, the bells will be fired a second tiem and then the students will assemble the parts with ribbon into their finished bell.
Both grades 5 and 6 have been working with threads and straws to make a straw knitting piece. Straw knitting is actually more like weaving than knitting. The soft texture of the thread is always a lovely medium to work with, and students had fun with colour and pattern and watching their piece grow longer. They could choose what they wanted to do with it at the end - some made a background for it using watercolour pencils, while others added some arms, facial features, and glitter, some turned it into a hair accessory, some made it into a creature with googly eyes, and still others decided to use it for a chin warmer or an eye mask. So much imagination!! Love it!!
