A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the F/1 Classrooms on Heights Campus

What a wonderful start to the term the F/1 students have had. They have returned to school with a positive attitude and readiness to learn. They have all settled back to school with ease and are following the routines and expectations of the classroom.

In Reading, the students are continuing to develop their comprehension strategies by asking and answering questions to better understand and discuss texts that they have listened to or read independently. We have been focusing on what a question is asking us, looking at the key words in the question and using the pictures. We are also learning to answer questions in full sentences using key words from the text.

In Writing, the students have been learning to write sentences about personal events and experiences. They are using familiar words from within our classroom environment, as well as attempting to spell unfamiliar words by recording the sounds they hear in the words. After they have completed their writing, the students have been encouraged to read back their sentences.

In Maths, the FLC and Year 1 students have been learning to solve simple subtraction problems. They have been modelling real life subtraction stories and using objects or counters to take away a small number from a larger number to find out how many left. We have also been developing our counting back strategy by using objects or number lines as support

In Social and Emotional Learning, the students have been learning to notice the similarities and differences between themselves and others. They are building their understanding around the idea that we are all different and that we have likes and dislikes. They recognise that sometimes they will like the same things as their friends and that sometimes they will like different things and that is okay. Students are becoming aware that some of their likes and dislikes may change as they grow older or that they may have different preferences in different situations.

In Projects, we have been learning to recognise where our food and clothing comes from.  We have been making connections between animals and the food we eat.

On Thursday 17th of October, the FLC students from both campuses went on an excursion to Chesterfield Farm in Scoresby. Our students had the opportunity to experience farm life. We went on a tractor ride around the farm, fed some animals in the paddocks, handled baby animals in the nursery, milked the cows, watched the working dog show and attended an education session. The Year 1 students also had a great day visiting CERES and learning about Aboriginal culture.
