Edendale Farm Excursion
On Wednesday 6th November, Year 3 Students will be heading off to Edendale farm as part of this term's Inquiry Unit. Students will be participating in a range of activities around waste management, recycling and sustainability and will get to visit and feed some of the animals too!
Please ensure your child is at school no later than 8.45am on Wednesday. They will need to bring a small backpack with their snack and lunch, water bottle and hat. They will not need to bring anything else to school on this day.
*Due to the long weekend and the excursion, homework will be handed out on Thursday, with slightly adjusted requirements.
Inquiry - Resources Needed
In the week beginning Monday 11th November, the Year 3 students will be learning about the recycling of textile waste as we continue our Inquiry topic of the ‘War on Waste’. Students will be asked to bring an old t-shirt to school to repurpose into a tote bag. The t-shirt can be of any quality or size (child or adult size), however no items with holes in them please - no one wants a hole in their bag!
Pancake Day!
Students had a great time today making and eating some delicious pancakes. This was part of the procedural writing unit, where students wrote out instructions for the pancakes they were making (check out their work below!) - practising using engaging verbs, lots of description and ensuring their directions made sense. It also involved lots of Maths - as students needed to measure out all of the ingredients to ensure their pancake mixture tasted great!
Huge thanks to the parents who volunteered to spend their day helping the students - it made the whole process much easier and ensured the students had a wonderful experience.
Nude Food Days
Nude Food Day is the day when we try to bring food to school with NO wrappers on it. Nude Food Days are randomly selected each week and announced just before recess snack. As a school community, we are trying to reduce the amount of packaging that food is brought to school in (eg cling wrap, squeezy yoghurt containers, soft plastics, juice poppers and boxes).
Consider buying your child’s favourite food in bulk or bigger sizes, and bringing a small portion to school in washable containers. This would be suitable for yoghurt, chips, biscuits with cheese, rice snacks and juice.
Each year, Australians throw away around 1.9 million tonnes of packaging – enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground nine times over. We need to significantly reduce this level of waste, and Nude Food Days at school is one way for each of us to play our part and protect the environment for future generations.
Our aim is to have zero wrappers in every classroom. Please talk with your student/s this week to discuss how they can bring their favourite foods to school without wrappers, foil or cling wrap. We know that many students are already bringing food in containers, with healthy food choices, so keep up the great work at home. Snap lock bags can be wiped out at home and re-used. Encourage your child to bring them home for another time and do not put them in the bin.
Melbourne SeaLife Aquarium Excursion
In the last newsletter, it was mentioned that the students will be going on an excursion as part of the Inquiry unit, ‘The Great Barrier Reef’. The permission and payment will be open on the Sunday, 3rd of November on Compass. The cost of the excursion is $39 and must be paid by Tuesday, 3rd of December.
The Year 4 students will travel by bus to the Melbourne SeaLife Aquarium on Tuesday, 10th of December 2024. Whilst on the excursion the students will participate in a 2-hour guided tour of the aquarium before a short break for lunch. The students will then re-enter the aquarium for a further hour of exploration. The excursion’s learning opportunities directly link with this term’s Year 4 Inquiry focus on the marine ecosystem, habitats and environment of the Great Barrier Reef.
Inquiry project
As part of our Inquiry unit, students will be working in small groups to present a topic related to the Great Barrier Reef. In the coming weeks, students will begin a 3D model that delivers specific information about the Great Barrier Reef. Most materials will be provided by the teacher such as coloured paper, sponges, paper plates etc. If your child would like to bring other specific materials, they are welcome to bring it into their classroom.
Have a look at what the Year 4s have been doing in their classrooms.
In Mathematics, we have continued learning about fractions. Have a look at some of the tangrams that have been made. Whilst in Inquiry, students have chosen an animal to research about.
