What's Been Happening?

Very Special St Cecilia's Alumni Return to their Old Classroom

At the fair I had the privilege and honour of meeting Eileen who was 94 year of age and her sister and Patricia who was 90.

These two women were amonng the very first students to ever attend St Cecilia's Primary school back in the 1930's and 1940's.

They both had remarkable recollections of their time at the school and credited the sister of St Joseph for helping them to go on to 'bigger and better things.'

It was a real pleasure talking to these two ladies and such a special insight into the history and legacy of our school.

Hello everyone! Silky the Silkmoth here. We’ve been living in the grade 3 classrooms for the past four weeks and teaching the children about our life cycle. We know, judging from the excitement of many students, we are fascinating creatures and we have been very grateful for the lovely, gentle care and attention from everyone.

Here are two recounts, from a couple of our gang, who described their transformative journeys in the classroom. The photos are from Zara.

Stepping into the Mind of a Silkworm in Year 3

Silkworm Recount by Oskar

Munch! Munch! Oh hello! I’m going to tell you about my life. I was once a little caterpillar living in a box with all my caterpillar friends. Every day we ate a mulberry leaf buffet. We didn’t live with our parents but we were fine with it.

I spent my time as a caterpillar eating and growing. Every morning some big, blue guys dropped fresh, mulberry leaves in my container. I ate delicious, juicy mulberry leaves during the day and slept like a rock at night. After a little while, I was twice my size and weight!

After a few weeks, I felt something inside telling me to find a quiet corner and weave a nice, little cocoon. After the morning buffet, I crawled into a nice, quiet corner and suddenly a soft thread of silk whipped out of my mouth.

I spun for hours, restlessly spinning silk. Finally, I was fully encased in my cocoon. I slept and grew for weeks in my cocoon. Finally I felt ready to emerge from my old self.

The cocoon broke open from my gentle pushing and I emerged as a beautiful white silkmoth ready to mate and start a new generation of silkworms.

That was my past life as a silkworm.

Silkmoth Recount by Scarlett

I was a little caterpillar on a mulberry tree. I did not live with my family but it was ok. I spent my time growing and eating juicy mulberry leaves. My days were very happy.

I spent most of my time eating delicious mulberry leaves. When morning arrived I got more yummy leaves from kids who gave them to me. I ate every day and I slept at night. In no time I grew twice my size!

Time passed and I felt something strange happen. I lay down and started spinning. After a day passed I was in a cocoon! I stayed in my cocoon for a few weeks. When the time came I began to poke a hole then another and another. A big push and I was out!

I had some wings. I let them dry in the sun. After a while I was ready to fly and I was a silk moth.
