Reading   I   Writing   I   Speaking & Listening

Reading This term, we will introduce reciprocal reading groups, focusing on the essential skills of predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarising. Students will engage in activities that build each skill and learn to support their understanding with evidence from the text. They will revisit the use of imagery and develop their ability to infer meaning when making predictions.

Writing Our writing focus will begin with narrative texts, building on knowledge from Term 1 and setting goals for improvement. Students will also work on procedural writing linked to our inquiry unit. Grammar concepts from throughout the year will be revisited and consolidated.

Spelling This term’s spelling focus will include:

  • the rules for using -dge and -tch after short vowel sounds
  • spelling rules for apostrophes
  • variations for long i, long o, and long u sounds
  • the phoneme/grapheme -ough

Each session will begin with a phoneme–grapheme warm-up. Students will continue to practise strategies for tackling unfamiliar words by applying phonics knowledge and spelling rules.

Speaking and Listening Students will further develop their communication skills through collaborative group work, reciprocal reading, and oral presentations. They will also use Seesaw to present information to peers and families.
