Three ASC students, Michi Takayama (Year 11), Oscar Gates (Year 11) and Jay Gates (Year 9) attended the Regional Youth Orchestra (RYO) held recently in Wollongong and Sydney. RYO is an audition-based youth orchestra for talented students from regional areas, and in the past have collaborated with musicians from world-class ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Australian World Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Alongside their successful auditions, these three students have achieved many amazing musical results throughout the year. In June, Michi and Oscar were invited to perform at the Armidale Eisteddfod Gala concert for their first-prize winning violin duet, while at the same concert Jay received the “Adjudicator’s Award for Cello (Secondary school)”. The students showed brilliance also in their AMEB exams later in the year, where Michi and Oscar were awarded a High Distinction for their Grade 8 Violin exams, and Jay for his Grade 7 Cello exam. Through their diligence and commitment to musical endeavours, the three students were also accepted into the Australian Honours Ensemble Program at Griffith University in September.
They lead the recently formed school orchestra (formerly string group), which will be performing at the ASC whole-school presentation day on December 8th.
