2023 Northern Schools Prime Steer Competition
It was Armidale’s turn to host the famous Northern Schools Prime Steer Competition (NSPSC) this year. Both myself and Grace Collins took on the challenge! It was a lot of work but very worthwhile for all of those who visited Armidale and competed. A very big thank you to Grace for her assistance. She did an amazing job. Thank you also to Mr Jason Walker for running a huge BBQ to feed everyone and for raising money for both ASC Agriculture and the Armidale Rams football club. Thank you also to Mr Mark Harris for his ongoing support and assistance and to those parents who also helped out!
I have included below the article that was submitted to the Land Newspaper. Our ASC Livestock Team did an amazing job of representing our school at this very big event! It was wonderful to see the team working so hard together to present both themselves and our cattle immaculately in the show ring. Both Grace and I were very busy running the competition so our students did all the work for our team. Well done!
Our students were very competitive against hundreds of other students. Clare Kelly won the Stage 5 Junior Judging competition with fantastic verbal reasonings given to a very big crowd. Congratulations Clare! Aliyah Snape placed in the top eight of the Stage 5 Paraders and was placed fifth in the Junior Judging. Felicity Bailey also placed in the top eight of the Stage 6 Paraders and fifth overall in the Junior Judging. Felicity also exhibited our blue ribbon winning steer. Renee Murdoch made the Stage 4 Paraders finals heat, Matty Andrews was placed in the top four in the Stage 5 Paraders and Mackenna was also placed in the Stage 4 Paraders finals heat. A fantastic effort team! Well done to all our students for working so well together!

Land Newspaper article - The 2023 Northern Schools Prime Steer Competition, held at Armidale Showground welcomed over 300 students from 30 schools across Northern NSW for two days of education in judging, parading, public speaking and steer market specifications.
Upon judging the steer classes, Mr Ben Toll (Toll Cattle Dubbo) spoke extensively on each exhibit, capturing the attention of students learning about the visual assessment of muscle and fat specifications as well as structure and type.
Tenterfield High School claimed the title of champion led steer, a Limousin steer led by Lachlan Heidrich. Mr Toll commented “historically, a benchmark exhibit combining excellent carcase traits with sound phenotype, a very free moving well-muscled soft steer that has natural presence and commercially relevant attributes. Production efficiency is a key factor in any steer production enterprise, and I particularly admire the high yielding winning steer which maintained a high degree of structural integrity and displayed optimum fat coverage.”
Reserve champion steer was a 540kg Speckle Park steer, exhibited by Cultivate Ag Kempsey/ Ersyldene Speckle Park led by Hayden Carter.
The competition also featured a class for a number of school steers not yet ready for processing, to be taken onto further shows in 2024. Armidale Secondary College placed first in this class with a Limousin steer bred by Lachlandale Limousins, Forbes. This outstanding steer will go on to the Sydney Royal Show.
Ella Saul (Cultivate Ag) was awarded Champion Parader in an intense final against first and second place winners from their respective age groups.
Reserve Champion Parader was presented to Rory Mcleod from Mclean High Show Team, the team which also snagged first place in the “best kept bed” category!
Students took to judging three groups of animals looking for “processing tomorrow” specifications and selected students spoke on these age groups. Amelia Webb (PLC Armidale) took out champion junior judge with 78 points out of a possible 85, assessed on her accuracy of observation, ability to compare animals, presentation, dress and public speaking ability.
Without a number of sponsors this show would not have been possible, the committee would like to thank the following for their generous support; Angus Australia, Purkiss Rural, University of New England, Ray White Livestock Guyra & Armidale, Limousin Society Australia, Herefords Australia, Rydges Armidale, Lifestyle Timbers, Kelly’s Transport, Ramage Engineering, The Downfall Limousins, Stockyard Scarves, Armidale Secondary College, Armidale Rams, B & T Henshall Plumbing, NEGS Armidale and Norco Agri-Solutions Armidale.
Mr Toll also wished to thank Mark Fisher and Grace Collins (Armidale Secondary College) for their efforts in organising an excellent educational program as well as Deb Snaith (McIntyre High School) for organising the carcase competition, with results due to be released soon.

SRE Christmas Celebration
Students from all SRE classes, across all Year-groups, combined to celebrate Christmas in the MPC. Games, surprises, gifts and clips helped students reflect on the question, 'What does Christmas have to do with hope?' The amazing student leaders from BOOST, our Christian lunch time group, were involved leading different parts, including MCs, slides, games, and small group discussions. Local youth leaders and church members joined in to support discussion groups and cook the well-received BBQ.
