Fri 1 Dec: Last Day Instrumental Music Lessons
It was my recent privilege to be invited to bring a group of Wantirna College students to perform music for the residents at Boronia Residential Aged Care. On the afternoon of Wednesday 22 November, Nicholetta Rigano, Daniel van Bergen and I accompanied eleven Year 9 and 10 students to the facility.
The students not only donated their time to going on this excursion, but also organised their own rehearsals in their own time. Some students banded together to perform in ensembles, others performed solo.
One of the residents, Gordon, had a beautiful violin that he had made himself, which he had never seen played. He was keen to see it played by a student. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a student on the day who could play the violin, however, I made a video of our Strings teacher, Tanya Bradley, playing the instrument. We showed this to Gordon and the other residents during our visit. This was well received and was a beautiful shared moment.
Here is some feedback from Gordon's daughter, Kerry, who came along to watch our students perform:
'...a big thanks especially to the Wantirna college students and staff who so generously and courageously came to perform for us all! It was such a treat, and great for young and old to come together to share their music and talent. Thanks so much for acknowledging Gordon’s violin 🎻 and for arranging to have it played so competently by the music teacher. Her composition was beautiful. It was a proud moment for Gordon and I could see that he was really moved by the gesture. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to you all.'
The students who participated in this performance were Izzy Antonopoulos, Madi Cook, Kaylee Freeman, Chloe Glaister, Dimitre Gosios, Emily Gray, Sage Mogyorossy, Josh Reid, Hannah Sangster, Xavier Teo and Natalie Walker.
On Wednesday afternoon myself and 10 music students from year 9 and 10 went to Boronia residential aged care to perform. There was a variety of instruments being played and a mix of small groups, pairs and solo performances. The residents loved it, some clapped along and others shared encouraging words. I enjoyed it and it was a great way to brighten up the residents day. - Kaylee Freeman, 10B
This outing went wonderfully, and will hopefully be the first of many. I was very proud of the way our students conducted themselves, and their willingness to do something kind for our elder community members.

Last night, our Voice students presented a fantastic night of singing in solo, small group and choir performances, attended by a very supportive audience of family, friends and College staff.
Thank you to Mr Lewis and the Tech Crew for doing another outstanding job on sound, lighting and staging, with a special thank you to Upswitch for the use of the special lamp lighting on stage. Thank you to the Parents of Performing Arts for providing refreshments.
On Monday lunchtime, our future students from Wattle Planet Kinder visited us again, as part of their music program, to watch our Stage Band rehearse.
The kindy children were delighted by all the instruments and our students were delighted by their response - clapping, dancing and interacting. We look forward to hosting them again in 2024!
