Principal's Column

A message from Mr. Gatt, Miss. Slaymaker & Mrs. Dixon

As always it has been another busy fortnight at Westgrove, with lots to celebrate. Here is a little snippet of all that has been happening!

Book Week

This week we celebrated Book Week! Children have been immersed in a number of experiences this week to celebrate.

We have had published authors Dean Rankine, Mary Anastasiou and Amy Adeney all join us this week for students to engage in author experiences. In addition, we held our annual Book Week Parade, Book Fair and staff members shared some of their favourite books as celebrity readers to classes across the school.

Our Book Week Parade this morning was such a celebration amongst the community. It was amazing to have so many of our students dress up this morning and have so many of our families attend!

We would like to thank Miss. Lhuede for all her work in organising these events!

Father's Day Stall - 4th September

The Father's Day Stall will be happening on Thursday 4th September. This year children will have the option to purchase $5 or $10 gifts only. Vouchers will be available for purchase via QkR, however cash will also be accepted on the day. Thank you to our parent volunteers who are setting up and running the stall.

Parent Opinion Survey

It is that time of year for our annual Parent/ Caregiver/Guardian Survey! We are encouraging all families to complete the survey (it should take no longer than 20 minutes). The survey is accessible in multiple languages.

Please see Compass or Class Dojo for the survey link and school code.

Let's see if we can have more than 110 surveys completed (last year's total)!

Science Week - Monday 11th August - Friday 15th August

Last week was Science Week with the theme Decoding the Universe! Throughout the week, Ms. Morton and Ms. Vlajkov organised a range of activities for our junior scientists. This included live virtual excursions from Scitech and the Australian Space Agency which were available throughout the week for our Year 3-6 students and a range of STEM experiments for our Year Prep -2 students. We would like to thank our staff for the organisation of these events!

District Athletics - Monday 18th August

On Monday we had 46 of our students participating in the District Athletics Carnival. Quite a number of students placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their events, which means some of these students will progress to the Division level. We are proud of all our students who participated - for their efforts, dedication and persistence.

In addition, we received some extremely positive comments and feedback about how this group of students represented themselves and our school on the day. They were congratulating children from other schools, offering high-fives and complimenting them on their participation.

Project Rock-It - Years 3 to 6

At the start of September, Project Rock-It will be running sessions with our Year 3-6 students around Bullying, which sits within our SEL and Wellbeing programs. The big ideas being covered are:

  • Each one of us matters, and we all have the power to make everyone feel like they belong (BELONG session)
  • Each one of us has the power to challenge bullying, eve in the smallest and simplest ways (UNITE Session)

Building Works Update

We would like to thank our community for their patience as we work through some of our building projects. In the coming weeks we are hoping that the installation of our new P-2 Playground will commence and that we will begin updating our Brian Reynolds Square.
