Grade 6 News

Literacy Update

Students are concluding their literacy unit centered around Once by Morris Gleitzman, a powerful novel that explores the experiences of a young boy during the Holocaust. To deepen their understanding and commemorate their learning, students participated in an excursion to the Holocaust Museum. There, they engaged in an immersive, interactive experience that followed the real-life journey of one of seven surviving children of the Holocaust. Through personal stories, historical artifacts, and multimedia displays, students gained a profound insight into the resilience, courage, and humanity of those who lived through this tragic period in history.

Mathematics Update

Students have been working diligently to consolidate their understanding of adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators. Through hands-on activities, visual models, and problem-solving tasks, they’ve developed strategies to find common denominators and simplify their answers, building confidence and fluency in working with fractions.

As we move forward, our focus will shift to exploring angles. Students will investigate different types of angles—acute, obtuse, right, straight, and reflex—and learn how to measure them using protractors. They will also explore how angles are formed, how they relate to shapes and geometry, and how to calculate unknown angles using mathematical reasoning.

AFL 9s Tournament

Our Year 6 students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and respect as they participated in the AFL 9s tournament held at Galen. Students were mixed into teams with peers from other local primary schools, creating a fantastic opportunity to build connections with others they may attend secondary school with in the future.

The day was filled with teamwork, friendly competition, and a strong sense of community spirit.
