Letter to Family and Friends

Dear Families,
The wellbeing of our students is at the heart of everything we do at Pilgrim School. When children feel safe, supported, and confident in managing their emotions and relationships, they are more engaged and ready to learn. Developing these life skills is just as important as academic growth, and together as a school and families, we can provide the guidance and encouragement children need to thrive.
This year, our wellbeing focus continues to centre on two key programs: Zones of Regulation and Friendology. Both programs are taught across the school and provide students with common language and strategies to manage their emotions, develop resilience, and build healthy friendships.
The Zones of Regulation helps children recognise and understand their emotions by categorising them into four "zones" (blue, green, yellow, and red). Students learn that all emotions are valid, and they are supported to use strategies that help them get back to a “green zone” where they can focus, learn, and feel balanced. At home, you can support your child by asking questions such as, “What zone are you in right now?” or “What might help you move back to the green zone?” This shared language between home and school makes it easier for children to practice self-regulation.
Friendology, part of the URSTRONG friendship program, is another powerful tool we use to help students understand the ups and downs of friendships. Children learn how to build healthy, respectful relationships, how to resolve conflict in safe and respectful ways, and how to recognise when a friendship may not be positive for them. At home, you can encourage your child by talking about what makes a good friend, practising respectful problem-solving, and reminding them that it’s normal for friendships to have challenges.
We also encourage parents to make use of the excellent free resources available through URSTRONG. By signing up at https://urstrong.com/parents/, you’ll gain access to practical tips, videos, and conversation starters to support your child in navigating friendships with confidence.
Together, we can create a strong partnership between school and home to nurture the wellbeing of every child. Thank you for continuing to support our programs and for taking an active role in helping your children grow as kind, resilient, and connected learners.
Warm regards,
Brett Middleton
