LOTE

Indonesian Independence Day

Last week in LOTE, students learnt all about Indonesian Independence Day, a national celebration held on the 17th of August each year. To mark this special occasion, we explored the traditions and activities that make this day meaningful for Indonesian communities.

We began by reading an engaging story titled ‘Lila’s Red and White Adventure.’ This story introduced students to the history of Independence Day and how children in Indonesia celebrate with their families and friends. The story helped us understand the importance of the red and white flag, a powerful symbol of freedom and unity for the Indonesian people.

After the story, students got to experience a slice of the celebrations by playing one of Indonesia’s favourite traditional games: ‘pensil di dalam botol’ (pencil in the bottle). The game involves tying a pencil to a string around the player’s waist and racing to lower it into a bottle without using your hands. It’s trickier than it sounds! This game is all about patience, focus, and teamwork—skills that were on full display during our lively sessions.

To finish our celebration, students reflected on what they had learned by writing the most interesting thing from the session on an Indonesian bunting. These will be displayed in our classroom as a colourful reminder of our learning and to honour 80 years of Indonesian independence this year.

It was a wonderful way to connect with another culture, learn through play, and appreciate the values of independence and unity that this day represents.

Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan Indonesia!

Happy Independence Day Indonesia!
