MAV Maths Games Days
Over two days in the past month, selected students from Grade 3 and 4 have travelled to Derrimut to participate in a Maths Games Day. On these days, teams of 4 competed together in a mathematical problem-solving competition, run by the MAV (Mathematical Association of Victoria).
The Maths Games Day was an opportunity for students to:
- Develop their mathematical talents and thinking skills in a setting where Maths is regarded as fun and worthwhile;
- Work with like-minded students from a diverse range of schools;
- Participate in mathematical activities without the usual classroom pressures;
- Win prizes and rewards;
- And just get excited about Maths!
Teams competed in a variety of mathematical activities, including the Amazing Race, problem-solving tasks, and head-to-head strategy games.
Congratulations to the teams that participated in these days. Your ability to stay calm and solve complicated problems, whilst also working well within a team, was very commendable.
Moving forward, we have two teams participating in the Grade 6 Maths Games Day at Genazzano College on Friday 5th September.
Good luck boys and girls!
Year 1 Phonics Check
This week, we have been using the Year 1 Phonics Check to better understand the phonics knowledge of our Grade 1 students. The Check looks at how well each child can 'decode' written words. The Check is administered individually for each student, with students reading 40 words aloud. There are a mix of real words and made-up words (nonsense words). The teacher listens to how each child sounds out the letter/letter groups and how they blend them together to make words.
The Phonics Check helps us to confirm whether each child is making the expected progress in reading. We also use the information to inform the next steps for our teaching of reading. We are very pleased with the Grade 1 cohort, who are all making terrific progress with their reading ability. We thank the Grade 1 teachers who are working hard to deliver a rich literacy program. The Grade 1 teachers will also use the data to guide parents on how they can continue to support their child’s reading at home.
