Secondary School

I hope that families were able to get a good break over the long weekend. I know our boarding families cherish these weekends as a time to have their children at home for a few days in the middle of the term.

Whole School Athletics Carnival

The Whole School Athletics Carnival was a real treat to end the week last week. It was fantastic to see the interaction between the Primary School and the Secondary School. This was the first time GSG has hosted a whole school carnival and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our Sport department for their work in organising the event. A lot of work went into making the day run like a well-oiled machine. The weather was kind to us, and we were able to complete all events. Some athletes even broke a couple of records with the wind at their backs down the home straight.

Presentations for the carnival will be happening during an upcoming assembly. Thank you to all families who were able to attend and watch the students on the day.

Reconciliation Week

Last week was Reconciliation Week in Western Australia and GSG did a couple of things to honour the week. Most notably, some of our students went on an excursion to Strawberry Hill at Barmup to learn about the Menang ties to that area. Students were guided by Indigenous elders and told stories about the meaning of the place from a Menang perspective.

During homerooms throughout the week, Homeroom teachers were encouraged to generate discussions about what Reconciliation is and to look at forging a positive future together. Later this term, Years Eleven and Twelve students will have an opportunity to look at indigenous inspired artwork in a T-shirt design workshop, led by Ms van der List.

World’s Greatest Shave

On Wednesday this week, we had a number of brave students participate in the World’s Greatest Shave, an event that raises awareness and much-needed funds for those who suffer from leukemia. The event was well supported by our community, with the team at GSG raising over $9,385, smashing our original goal of $5,000. Not only did a number of our Year Twelve students donate their hair to the cause, but our very own Dr Mitrovski also clipped off his iconic long locks to support the cause.

SSWA Cross Country Carnival

GSG took a team of 17 to the School Sport WA Secondary Champion Schools Cross Country Carnival in Perth last week. It provided an excellent opportunity to expose our runners to a significant, competitive event with hundreds of competitors.

All our runners did very well in a strong field and are to be congratulated on their effort and attitude.  Our aim is to take an even larger squad next year and we look forward to having these runners return in 2026, accompanied by many more GSG students.
