Primary School

History is made: The first Whole School Interhouse Athletics Carnival

The Primary School was alive with excitement on Friday for our very first Whole School Interhouse Athletics Carnival, with students from Pre-Primary to Year Twelve coming together to participate in team and individual games. The House Spirit was high and the general vibe was great to be amongst. With the new format, overall points and individual medalists will be announced at the next whole school assembly. Families will be notified in advance of the date and given the opportunity to attend if their child is receiving a medallion.

Classroom News

We hope you enjoy reading the news from our Early Childhood and Primary classes.

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten classes were very excited to plant herbs and onions and look forward to watching them grow. The students were great little gardeners who put on their gloves before they prepared the soil, planted the seedlings and then watered them in. They will continue to nurture the plants and watch them grow so that we can use the produce. This whole process links in beautifully with our farming theme and inquiry into farms and produce.

Pre-Primary

Pre-Primary enjoyed a spectacularly busy week with Grandparents’ Day, Athletics Carnival and learning about reconciliation. We loved sharing our story of The Very Hungry Dinosaur with our grandparents before sharing a lovely morning tea with them. We enjoyed our first athletics carnival and are very proud of everyone’s House Spirit and sportsmanship.

Year One

The Year One students went on their first excursion, but we will share more details of that next week! Last Thursday we were super excited to invite our grandparents and special friends into the Year One class. They loved the Primary School music concert and then came back to our class to receive some gifts, which included wearing the special badge we made for them. They then took part in some fun activities like ‘Roll a Grandma’ or ‘Roll a Grandpa’ games, and they filled in the grandparent/grandchild fact files and shared in our classroom fun before joining us for a picnic outside. Thank you, grandparents and special friends; we love you!

Year Two

The class was very excited late last week on arrival to school, when they found a Marvellous Mixture bubbling away in the classroom! There was a letter attached which prompted many thoughts and ideas about what it was, and where it had come from! We then read the letter; it was from George, from the book George’s Marvellous Medicine. It included a recipe and an explanation as to why we had been asked to look after it. Luckily, this happened to fit so well into our Talk 4 Writing unit on procedural texts, and we have been busy learning the story map about the text.

Year Four

The Year Four students thoroughly enjoyed welcoming their grandparents into class last week and taught them how to play a game using Multi-based Arithmetic Blocks (MAB). It is easy to see where they get their competitive nature from! The Year Four class has also been learning to calculate perimeter and area in Mathematics and discussed how these measurements are used in everyday life. In Science, they had great fun inventing or playing games that used force to move objects.

Year Five

This week Year Five is busy on camp and we look forward to sharing our adventures with you next week. Last week we were starting our days with a Berocca. However, not as the advert suggests because we have a daunting day ahead of us. Instead, we have been experimenting to see whether the temperature of our water has affected the rate of the change in states of matter. Students designed the experiment to involve three different temperatures ranging from icy through to hot. The results were interesting, and we can reveal if you are in a hurry in the morning, pop that Berocca in a warm cup of water and not your morning smoothie. In other news, we have been hosting our class elections this week. Our six parties made their last pitches to our audience before the whole class got to cast their votes in a preferential voting system.

Year Six

Our Year Six students have stepped into the shoes of global changemakers, researching real-world issues and beginning to draft persuasive speeches fit for the United Nations! Using their persuasive writing toolkits, students are crafting powerful arguments on topics ranging from climate change to human rights, aiming to inform, inspire and influence. Watch this space as our young voices speak up for a better future!

Languages

Did you know we start every Language session with a song? The lyrics are in French, and we include AUSLAN actions for key words. It is a well-loved routine that appeals to students across all year levels. It is not only a great way to settle in and create a positive learning atmosphere, but also a powerful tool for language acquisition. Singing supports memorisation and pronunciation, and the repetition of lyrics helps reinforce vocabulary, grammar concepts and sentence structures − without any of it feeling like hard work!
