🌱 LITERACY - Reading

Students have finished their exploration of Waves by Donna Rawlins. This thought-provoking picture storybook presents a collection of narratives that reflect the challenging journeys of immigrants and refugees throughout Australia’s migration history. Students are now comparing Waves to another of Rawlins’ well-known books, My Place, exploring how both texts present stories of identity, belonging and cultural change over time. Their analysis includes vocabulary, figurative language, illustrations, themes and character experiences and the author's purpose.

What you can do at home

Encourage your child to discuss the stories and themes they’ve explored in Waves and My Place. You might also like to share your own family’s cultural background or any personal or ancestral stories of migration to help your child make meaningful connections with the texts.

Writing

All students are now storyboarding their own picture storybooks that explore themes of cultural diversity. Drawing on everything they have learned this term about migration, identity, and different cultural experiences, students will begin drafting their narratives. Each book will include a clear message, meaningful themes, and a focus on some aspects of cultural diversity. This creative project allows students to express their understanding through both written language and illustrations.

What you can do at home

Talk to your child about the story they are planning for their picture storybook. Ask them to explain the message they want to convey and how it connects to cultural diversity. This can help spark ideas and deepen your child’s thinking as they develop their narrative.

🌱 NUMERACY

Students are exploring the concept of probability, developing their understanding of how likely different outcomes are to occur. They are learning to describe chance events using words such as "certain," "likely," "unlikely," and "impossible," and are beginning to express these using numerical scales from 0 to 1. For example, an event that is certain has a probability of 1, while an impossible event has a probability of 0. Students are also conducting simple experiments, recording outcomes, and using fractions, decimals and percentages to represent and compare probabilities.

What you can do at home

Encourage your child to complete the Probability tasks assigned to them on Mathletics. These activities are designed to reinforce the concepts explored in class. Sitting with your child as they work through the tasks or discussing the questions afterwards can help deepen their understanding and build confidence with the topic.

🌱 CBL

This term our Big Idea is Diversity, specifically focusing on cultural diversity. Grade 5 and 6 students will explore multicultural Australia, the waves of migration and how this has shaped our country.

Essential Question:

How does cultural diversity shape our identity and sense of belonging?

Guiding Questions:

- What does cultural diversity mean to us?

- How has living in a culturally diverse society enriched our lives?

- What challenges can people face in a culturally diverse society?

- How can we inspire people to value cultural diversity?

This week, students will also be working on the development of their picture storybooks during CBL. These sessions will give students time to plan, write and illustrate their stories, drawing on their personal experiences, class discussions and knowledge of cultural diversity.

🌱 HOMEWORK

Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of

- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice

- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign

- 2 Nessy activities

This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.

 🌿 REMINDERS

🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA

Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day, where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
