NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME BRINGS OUR SCHOOL TOGETHER THROUGH THE JOY OF READING

‘The Truck Cat’ by Deborah Frenkel

The Truck Cat is a wonderful story about hope, friendship and belonging. It tells the story of Tinka the cat, who travels with Yacoub, a truck driver and recent migrant who feels misunderstood in his new home. When Tinka is separated from Yacoub, they both go on a journey to find a place to call home.

Last Wednesday, our school was buzzing with excitement as students and staff from Prep to Grade 6 came together to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime - a special event that highlights the power of reading and storytelling across Australia.

At the same time as thousands of other schools, libraries, and early learning centres across the country, our students gathered in classrooms, the library, and other learning spaces to enjoy this year’s featured book, The Truck Cat. Eager participation filled the rooms as students listened, read along and shared their thoughts on the story. For our younger students, it was a chance to build listening and comprehension skills, while older students reflected on themes from the book. Students then created artworks and writing pieces based on the story.

The goal of National Simultaneous Storytime is to promote the value of reading and literacy by having children from all over Australia read the same book at the same time. This shared experience encourages community spirit, a love of literature and the joy of learning together.

Our teachers, support staff, office staff and even the Principal team joined in the fun. Seeing the entire school community take part in a single reading moment was truly special. Events like NSS not only celebrate books but also remind us of how stories can connect people of all ages and backgrounds.

Take a look at some of the photos of this special event in this newsletter. Adding to the excitement, our Assistant Principal, Mr. Kenny, has created a special read-aloud of the story for families to share at home. His engaging delivery really makes the story come to life. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Storytime celebration—until then, happy reading! 📚✨
