Middle Years News

Congratulations on another successful term!
As Term 2 comes to a close, it’s important to reflect upon the learnings and successes from the first half of the year. Students have completed their first semester’s worth of learning for 2025, and the reports will provide a key source of data for reflection. What study strategies have worked? What needs to be done differently next term? I congratulate all students on their learning success this term, and encourage all families to engage in these conversations to set their child up for further successes in Term 3.
Additionally, on 3 July, the second whole Middle School assembly took place. With a keynote address from Koonung alumnus, this assembly continues to be a keystone in the development of the Middle School culture, promoting community amongst our students.
The recipients of the Excellence Through Endeavour awards have been selected based on their conduct and application to school life across Term 2, including their demonstration of the school values. Congratulations to the following recipients:

Year 9 Live Life fundraisers
Our Year 9 Live Life Group module is designed to encourage students to support and give back to the local and school community. We held an exciting fundraising event on Wednesday, 28 May. The event was a fantastic success, featuring four stalls.
We were incredibly fortunate to receive donations from Coles, Woolworths, Kmart (in the form of vouchers), and Domino’s Box Hill, who kindly provided pizzas. Their support was greatly appreciated and helped make the event even more special.
The fundraiser featured four delicious and creative stalls, each run by year 9 students. The two bake sale stalls were a big hit, one offering honey joys and fresh pancakes with a range of toppings, and the other filled with homemade goods like brownies, blondies, rocky road, and caramel slice. A third stall served ice cream cups with fun topping choices, and the fourth stall kept everyone cool and refreshed with Domino’s pizza and a variety of drinks.
The event was buzzing with excitement and had a fantastic turnout from Koonung students, with the room packed and energy high all afternoon. Thanks to the hard work of our students and the generosity of our community, we raised over $1,000 to support MND. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, helped, or came along.

"This term I was in the Group module of Live Life, where we got to create a fundraiser to raise awareness for MND. We had Domino's pizza donated to our group, and it was such an interesting experience and great success!"

"During Term 2 I was doing the Live Life/Community Module where my partner and I did a community placement at Beverley Hills Primary School, we helped in the art room, engaging in a messy yet fun experience with paint and clay. Overall, it has been an enjoyable time helping the children."

"In the past term I have completed the live life module of community and have enjoyed every moment of it. Me and my partner Emily have been helping at a local primary school and have formed connections with the children and teachers there and gained skills in teaching and helping others."
Georgette JOUGHIN
"This term we did a various of activities. For live life, I worked with my partner Georgette in the community module. We were allocated to Doncaster Primary school. Despite being split up into different classes, we still got to bond with students around the school even if they weren't part of the class we worked with. The teacher I worked with was also really nice and made me feel extremely comfortable helping out there. We formed strong bonds with the school and I will treasure this experience."

I loved the 2025 athletics carnival, because I was able to help with the athletics BBQ. It was really fun, very collaborative, and a social event. I am glad we raised a lot of money for the Pat Cronin Foundation. If I had the opportunity to help out with the athletics BBQ again, I would quickly respond with a 'yes!'
