Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four
Welcome back! We hope you all had a relaxing break and managed to keep warm during the cold winter days. It’s been great to see the students return refreshed and ready to go. We’ve hit the ground running this term, with the kids settling back in quickly and getting into the swing of things. Classrooms are full of energy and learning, and it’s lovely to see everyone so engaged. There’s a real buzz around the school already as we start preparing for our school production that is happening later this term. The excitement is building, and we can’t wait to see all the hard work come together on stage.
Over the past two weeks, 5/6 students have explored some wonderful literary texts and responded to them in a variety of ways. Our current Maths unit is all about Fractions and the students are enjoying solving fraction based problems and representing fractions in many different ways. Students have continued with media based learning for Inquiry and are already having fun on Specialist Days practicing and preparing for the Wizard of Oz school production.
Bishop Martin Ashe Visit
Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Bishop Martin Ashe to our school for a special visit with our Confirmation candidates. In preparation for their upcoming Sacrament of Confirmation next month, Bishop Martin spoke beautifully about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, helping students deepen their understanding of their faith journey.
He took the time to speak with students about their chosen Confirmation names, explained some of the important parts of the ceremony, and answered thoughtful and meaningful questions from the group. It was a truly lovely visit that left students feeling inspired and excited for their upcoming Confirmation. We are grateful to Bishop Martin for his time and guidance.
Hockey Divisional Competition 29/7/25
On Monday 29th July, our OLSC Girls Hockey team took to the field for the Wyndham Division Hockey Competition—and they did us proud!
The team played with skill, determination, and fantastic teamwork throughout the day. Their hard work and preparation paid off, with the girls finishing 1st overall in the competition!
We’re thrilled to announce that OLSC will now be moving on to the Regional Finals next month—a huge achievement and an exciting opportunity for our team.
Congratulations to all the players for their amazing effort and sportsmanship. We can’t wait to cheer you on at Regionals!
TeeBall Divisional Competition 24/7/25
On Wednesday 24th July, our Girls and Boys TeeBall teams headed to President's Park to represent our school in the Wyndham Division TeeBall Competition—and what a fantastic day it was! Both teams showed great sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination throughout the day as they competed against schools from across the division. The level of play was high, but our students rose to the challenge and gave it their all. We’re proud to share that the Boys team finished 2nd overall, and the Girls team came 3rd overall—an amazing achievement! While we didn’t make it through to the next round, the effort, attitude, and team spirit on display made us incredibly proud. A big thank you to the staff and families who supported the teams, and of course, congratulations to all the players for representing our school with pride!
Happy Principal Day Justin
All of the 5/6 students created cards and wrote something special for Justin as today is Principal Appreciation Day! Justin visited the classes to receive his gifts from the students. There was lots of cheering and well wishes. We are all so grateful here at OLSC to have a Principal as exceptional as Justin!
Infectious Disease
As we head into Term 3, we are seeing a rise in seasonal illnesses across the community, including RSV, COVID-19, influenza, and pneumonia. These illnesses have had a noticeable impact on our school, with many students and staff affected.
We kindly ask families to keep children at home if they are feeling unwell, even with mild symptoms. This helps prevent the spread of illness and keeps our school community safer and healthier for everyone. Please take a moment to talk to your child about the importance of good hygiene practices—such as regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with others when sick. Your support makes a big difference in helping us maintain a safe and caring learning environment for all.
Social Media
It has come to our attention that some students are watching inappropriate content on YouTube, TikTok and other social media platforms and discussing the content or words heard at school. Creators of these platforms are very clever when creating their content using cartoon characters and images that appeal to children but with an adult message and content. We strongly encourage all parents to be vigilant and monitor their child's social media use.
Grow, Harvest, Share – The Wyndham Seed Library
The Wyndham Seed Library is a free program available at local libraries including Manor Lakes, Point Cook, Tarneit, Werribee, and Hoppers Crossing. With a Wyndham Council Library Card, members can borrow one packet of seeds per month to grow fruit, vegetables, native, or indigenous plants. Seeds can be harvested and returned to keep the cycle going and support sustainable gardening in our community. We encourage families to collect shrubbery seeds to support our Gardening Club, led by Scott, Sam, Sarena and our student gardeners, who will plant them around the school.
To learn more, visit your local library or the Wyndham City Council website.
Fan Needs YOU!
We’re asking families to collect plastic bottle tops at home and bring them into school to support a special project. Fan is working on creating something exciting and creative, and your contributions will help make it possible! Thank you for your support and keep those bottle tops coming in!
Thankyou
LC4 students & staff would like to send a big thankyou to Alison for all she has done for us. We wish Alison every happiness as she begins her retirement. We will all miss her very much.
